How do you find your CX-5 highway acceleration to be?

Depends what you are coming from. We do mostly highway driving and have to quickly accelerate on them merging with 75+ MPH traffic. Our 2014 just doesn*t cut it and is a dog executing this safely, meaning no one cuts you a break where I live merging! Again if your used to slow you will think its fine. :D I just think a great handling SUV with a smooth shifting 6 speed transmission deserves a more powerful sport trim that makes it fly. I sure hope Mazda stays away from going CVT as other than Subaru*s execution of one, they sound and feel horrible during acceration. Drive a Nissan Rouge to get my point.

Yep!

Nah..that*s your MazdaSpeed decal. [emoji23][emoji23]

But seriously, it holds gear longer so, at least it feels like, it provides more torque for passing.

I just press the pedal a little harder and don't worry about some stupid switch on the console. It doesn't make any sense to use for passing. Mountain twisties? I can kindof see it. maybe. But passing? ROFL!

I honestly don't have a problem merging at 85+mph on the freeway. This thing does 0-60 in about the same time some of my vehicles have done 0-100+. Yeah, it's not going to impress anyone, but it does just fine.

When I first got the car it did felt sluggish when getting onto the freeway. My previous car was a 2014 Mazda 3 sGT hatch and I can definitely feel the extra weight when getting onto the freeway. However after I got more miles on the car it seems to be doing just fine. I also have a JBR drop in filter so the car breathes a bit better and that made the car more responsive especially when getting onto the freeway. I do notice that very often I'm going 70+ mph without knowing. It's like once at highway speeds you don't have to press the gas too hard to get going. Only time I use sport mode is on long trips that involves going up mountains and stuff and this car did very well at that too.

You adapt. I drove a C6 Z06, and a Infiniti G20. Fun car on nice days was the Z, boring car for work was the G20. If I didn't drive the Z06 in a few weeks, the G20 started to feel aight!

Part of the issue here is how we all drive differently. You'd be surprised how many people think dropping the pedal TO THE FLOOR is somehow bad for the engine...something you shouldn't do. They push the pedal halfway... omg so slow... Some don't even know there's a kickdown switch under the gas pedal or if they do, they don't know what it is.
Take your test drive ... And STEP ON IT. And Google kickdown switch if you're unfamiliar.

Don*t forget SPORT MODE!

I have had no issues merging into freeways or passing. The power is adequate.

Thomas from Autogefuhl has a video on the CX5 as he drove it around in Germany. It is well worth watching.

Thanks for that video. I'll be sure to watch it.

I went looking and found vids on the AutoBahn of the diesel version but not the standard petrol.

The one good point I read about the power plant was that it does not do justice to the sophisticated suspension system...that the suspension is capable of so much more than the 2.5L will do.

Regarding Darwinism on our roadways...I lived outside of DC for over 45 years, and have the death-grip indentations in my steering wheel to prove it. I'm in a more rural part of Virginia now, so my issue is not so much the aggressiveness as it is (1) passing on a 55MPH road with only one lane in either direction (passing into oncoming traffic) and (2) being on the 70MPH interstate that only has 2 travel lanes and trying to get out of the way when I need to.

And I pull onto 55MPH roads at a dead stop from side streets and need to get up to speed without an on-ramp...but there's really not that much traffic to merge into.

I saw someone else talking about the JBR Short Ram Dry Flow Air Filter on another forum, but it looked like it required [possible warranty voiding modification. I'll check out the drop in. I've already been poking around the Weather Tech site and seat cover sites. Every time I get a vehicle, it seems I accessorize my bank account to death.

Thanks for the input on Sport Mode. Now I'm retired, I have the time to get back to some of the parkways in the Virginia Mountains (Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway) I used to frequent, and I wondered about how Sport Mode would do there.

edit to add: I see the JBR website does not list any 2018 Mazdas on the filter page. http://www.jamesbaroneracing.com/sh...ct_info&cPath=333_340_427_428&products_id=594 I'll have to drop them an email and ask why.

Part of why I ask was that I DID step on it during my test drive...and nothing happened. No engine roar...nothing. We were on the highway, in light traffic, doing 70. I mentioned it, but we got to talking about something else.

I have a list of specific things to look at for my next (more extensive) test drive, and this is (obviously) one of them.

That particular vehicle has just been driven 300 miles from another location the dealer has, so I wonder if the Max Speed setting had been engaged.

I was fine merging into traffic as we entered the highway.

It's not quick, it's adequate.

If you need to go fast STOMP ON IT. As 7 pointed out, you won't hurt it.

Forget sport mode, it's not for acceleration, it's for raising shift points. Useful when you're hustling on curvy roads in lower gears/speeds, but otherwise useless.

You won't accelerate any faster in sport mode than you will if you just keep your foot on the floor.

But what's with this ASL? New for 18, or just for markets other than the US? My 17 has nothing like that.

Yeah right? Wtf setting is this?
I think you need to find something else, OP. If you were flooring it and it's still not enough for you, this is not the car for you.

Here's a link to the ASL function in the owner's manual. http://owners-manual.mazda.com/gen/en/cx-5/cx-5_8ft1ee17b/contents/05281507.html

This takes you a few pages into it, you need to scroll up to where it begins.

I'm new to Mazdas, I have no idea when this was introduced. I just went to the Build Your Own CX-5 on the MazdaUSA page, and ASL is not listed as a specific feature in any of the packages. I get the impression it is part of the i-ActiveSense (specifically part of Cruise Control with Stop & Go)...but this is only a deduction on my part. ASL is listed with all the iActiveSense features in the manual.
