How do most thieves break into a car?

I am designing my own home made security system, but I am trying to keep it simple.

I have external motion, internal motion, and glass/shock sensors in the design, but my current design would turn off the alarm if the drivers side door was unlocked.
But that would not protect the car against slim jims.

So here is the question:
How do most thieves break into a car?
Does anyone have links to a study on the topic?

I know that wiht my honda the 3times it got broken into (stolen once) they jsut bashed out the driver's side window. I'd be kinda leary of doing it JUST off of the lock, but I cna see the appeal, perhasp you can make that a "valet" mode or something?

a lot of times they'll break out the small triangle window, cause it's not so obvious that they are breaking it.
Not to mentio its in the back and they won't get cut driving it.

Since it just happened to me on Tuesday. I can tell you that some break your driver's side window and open the door only to steal your stereo and scratch up your interior. Mean people sux!

That or something you can pick up at most stores, along with a screwdriver and people can be in just about any car in under 30seconds by undoing the lock from the inside.
Problem is if someone wants your stuff then they will get it.

The only piece of mind I have now on my roomates car is the cameras that watch it around the clock. Least then if they do we can possibly get a shot of them, that and having red dots staring at you makes a strong impact.

Now if you don't want the car to be stolen then start taking parts with you when you lock it up. Plug wires, coil, ECU, plugs etc. It is extreme but is about the only thing that works around here now. The people stealing cars do it under a minute, even around the owners who are mere 10 feet away.

no need for all that, they have relays that you can change out your stock ones with so that you can disable your car, and there is no way to steal it;) but how often do cars get stolen nowadays? it's usually the CD player. a thief broke into my friends car and stole his CD player, but left his car key in his cup holder, and the $20 in the center console alone(crazy)

Up here and in most cities, the common practice is for thieves to just tow the car on a flat bed. Disabling won't do dick.

How often? hehe here it is almost every single day a car gets stolen. If you are sporting a Front mount then you are prime target. They take it, strip it and leave the burnt hull on a road 1-2days later.

And changing relays does not always work. People have taken their ECUs, and for Hondas just about any ECU will work so the thieves carry them around. When they get in and see one missing, they use theirs. Also have extra batteries etc. Friend I know "use" to jack s*** before he wise up.
They even up the punishment now due to the high car rate here in NOVA.
I know of at least 4 people in the last few weeks, and seen many more on the side of the road every month..burnt..striped.

i guess the thieves around here aren't that advanced yet(canada)

REMillers, how often do just the radios get stolen? i'm always hearing about CD players that got stolen, but rarely cars around here in daytona. the relays will plug in under the dash and disable the starter or fuel pump, or whatever else you want to disable;) a thief would have to know exactly which relay to pull out and have a spare to put in;)

Just don't leave your car....EVER!!! They would have to be pretty desperate to steal you too(laugh)

Oh, yeah I see tons of cars on 50 on the way out of DC everyday stripped and burnt. Quite bothersome.

Thanks for the input guys,

Here is my new plan:

The alarm will be de-activated anytime I use the remote to unlock the car.

The normal key-holes will not de-activate the alarm, unless the car is started within 30 seconds. (In which case if someone wants to take the actual car, then they will have by then)

I will be building this later, so i got more time to think it out, but I want it as simple, yet effective as possible.

hey all you have to do now is give us your address.....havent you ever heard? never trust the internet ....me personally i'm no car thief but one we know what you have in your car...two how quick we need to take it. so, all we need now is the address and when you plan on getting this fool proof system done and it should be gone before you do it...since their is really no need to wait for you to install it...you better hurry up b-4 its too late....muh hah hah hah hah hah

We do have a huge number of radios stolen, even stock radios are not safe. This last week two cars had their rims stolen in my neighborhood. Relays can work, but even heard of friends who had fuel cuts off get jacked. Problem arises is that most people will put the relays and switches in places where people can guess. Then it is just a matter of changing it.
I swear there is some sort of "ring" doing these cause they are gone, striped and return so damn fast. And if they aren't burnt to the ground then they are sprayed in WD-40.

Month or so ago a guy working at a gas station had his Turbo Si stolen in front of him. He turned to help a "customer" and bam his car was gone. That is DAMN quick.

They also have been known to take floor mats etc. There just isn't anything safe around here anymore which is why they pumped up the fines and jail time now for car thiefs.

Umm, ya, there is nothing in the car at all yet, so you might as well go steal a grandpa's protege.
Plus it's pretty hard to find me, as I don't mail stuff I order to my home address, but to a business address.

well if you leave your door unlocked like alot of ppl, they open it and take what they want

good god man, ever think of moving out of the ghetto?
