This is an interesting one because the odometer information on the Mazda6 is actually stored in the gauge cluster itself! Two people swapped gauges (optitron and regular) onto each other's cars and not only did the gauges work, but they got the other's odometer reading!

So there's your answer, find a gauge cluster with a smaller odometer reading. And obviously, you can't do this at a dealership, so it has to be junkyard or something.

Edit: The dealer can use the WDS software to put in the correct odometer reading, so technically this is another solution (but both solutions are almost impossible to do, which also makes sense).

Thank you wong for your response while the swapping out of the clusters is a great idea how about just disconnecting the whole cluster itself and not replacing it is there a fuse or something that i could pull and will the car still run without it reading new miles on to the odometer?

That would probably work but you'd be driving without a speedometer, tach, fuel gauge, temp gauge, or any warning lights, and on the Protege at least the interior lights (overheads) won't turn on if it's unplugged.

If it was that easy, scammers around the world would be doing this already.

You can disconnect the gauges, but then you have no gas/speed/temp/CEL readouts. Best way for you is to buy another gauge off someone, put that in and let it rack up the mileage. Then when your done, swap the stocker back in. They are gunna kinda wonder how you only have a weeks worth of mileage after a long period of time though.

thanks for the replies guys as far as only having a few weeks worth of mileage i have the car for about 4 months now and have about 12k miles on it already ... so that 36k is creaping up fast and i have 2 and half years left... im gonna try this out though thanks boys

sorry to step on your ant farm....rain on your parade...and piss out the camp fire but...mileage is also stored in the pcm!

Who the **** leases a car knowing they are gonna go so far over that allowed limit?? Looks like you just OWNED yourself!!

ahemmm what the **** is a pcm???

2k3 incidental things i had to drive this car down the east coast twice already both times unexpected family health probs... not that that matters but is the reason for the mileage

Its the brain of the car that controls almost everything....the cluster stores the mileage and the pcm stores the mileage. Dealer can use their wds system to update and read the current programs on the pcm. PCM is also refered to as the ECU. in a few years it will be considered spyware cause it will also keep track of how fast you are going and also an average on how often you don't wear your seat belt. This info is originaly intended to be kinda like the black box in a plane when it crashes. If the insurance company had access to this...alot of policys will be tagged and charged more or droped all thogether.

Back on topic...(lol2)
when you lease a vehicle you have to not drive it as much. Also you won't have the fun of modding cause you don't own the vehicle. Baby the hell out of it cause at the end of lease they subtrack an assload of money for every dent and scratch they find under fine comb. All I gotta say is either take the bus or walk to wherever when you are about to go over the amount you agreed on per month. Rule of thumb is never lease a vehicle. Trust me I have a high ass payment till I refinance(Pending) but I can mod like crazy since it's almost like a past time to me.

Yeah, there's no way around the odo in out cars. Unless you swap out ECU's, but I believe they also have a date thing built in that tells the dealership when you swapped.

rabirza69,

I'd be wary about posting these types of requests on a forum. It doesn't take much work to find out who your leasing from, and mazda dealerships and even Mazda Usa do visit these forums.

Best to keep the illegal felony type stuff offline.

He he - I was wondering why no one had posted this obvious fact yet :)

And rabirza69 - I hope you realize that a dealer has already poste in this thread, and by now has looked up your info (if he's in a bad mood, or wants to prevent a crime being committed).

You expect people to feel sympathy for ou because you had to drive the car more than expected due to family health problems - that part is fine. And I personally hope everything is fine now. But don't ask us to help you commit a crime. Its life. Deal.

Answer is find another MAZDA dealership that will risk their necks to reset your mileage on pcm and cluster before turn in. Thats the only way you can fool the dealership you bought it. Any other way would be like trying to add water to your engine oil to bring it back to max level. Nobody would post that cause it's the wrong thing to do. If you don't get caught then you don't get caught. if you do get caught then there is a whole thread saying "I told you so"

The easiest thing to do is pay someone to steal your car (I am not recommending this, and you're an idiot if you actually do it). This is actually a very common thing these days for people in your exact situation. They hire someone to steal their leased vehical because they are afraid they aren't going to be able to handle the excessive milage fees. The insurance company then has to foot the bill, and you get the value of what the car is worth according to its age, not its milage. Then your dealer fixes you up with a new car (leased again). All you lose is your deductable.

This is one of the reasons we all pay insane insurance rates.

Anyways, regardless of what you do, some poor sucker out there is gonna have to pay for your selfishness, whether it be someone purchasing your "low milage" used vehicle from a dealership, or all of us paying higher insurance costs for your "stolen" vehicle.

My advice is to be an honest person and go back to the dealership and try to bargain with them. If you purchase another car form them they will be reasonable with you. Don't be an ass and make someone else pay for your sorry situation. (boom02)

Always remember "What goes around comes around" also remeber nobody said it will only come around once. Be prepared for what your actions may cause. You might think the next person will be happy cause they now have a few extra miles to claim warrenty but they still will be getting dicked.
