How dark should I go?

Well i just did my first night drive and I dont get what the big deal is!! I can see just fine at night and whoever cant see out at night are blind!! As for cops putting an X through windows, how the hell would that help? The tint are inside the car and not the outside of the car. Man how stupid can cops get. (boom02)

It is a warning for you to get rid of it...they open the doors and X the tint. If they pull you over (or another cop does) its pretty obvious that you have been warned before about your tint.

I don't understand how they can get away with destroying your property (scratch)

#1: They aren't destroying it, just marking it. Similar to putting a chalk mark on a tire of a vehicle that has been parked in the same spot for too long.

#2: It's illegal property, anyway. If they wanted to, they could make you take off the tint right then and there, give you a ticket for illegal equipment or impound your car.

You break the law, you take your chance. (shrug)

but a razor blade will not just mark the tint, it will make a permanent mark into the glass

I don't see how permanently scratching your window (and it will be noticable, especially on the inside) is ever ok, especially in certain situations (for example: 1. you install legal tint, then move to or visit an area with more strict tint laws, or 2. you buy a car already tinted)

this doesn't sound any more legit than a cop spray painting an X on your headlights because you install blue turn signal bulbs, or something to that effect...

You'd have to push incredibly hard on a razor blade to make a mark in glass.

Regardless of "certain situations", you should know the law. I'm sure you've heard the saying "ignorance is no excuse". If you have illegal tint, you're breaking the law. If you break the law and get caught, you should accept the punishment.

I'm not trying to defend cops, just saying that if you do the crime, be prepared to do the time (or pay the fine). A law is a law, whether you think it's fair or not. Instead of complaining about it on a message board, write to your state representatives and try to change it. Be prepared to have reasons to back up your opinions.

the people that put in my tint made some stray marks on the windows with razorblades and they are noticable

You're making it sound like having your windows vandalized is the sanctioned punishment for driving a vehicle with illegal tint, which is not the case. Fines and removal orders, yes. If I put illegal tint on my car, I would be prepared for potential tickets, fines, etc. But not to have a law enforcement official vandalize my car.

I don't live in massachusetts, or wherever this is a common activity. In addition, I don't see this window-scratching to be a state-sanctioned practice.

Like nate was saying, I understand tickets and fines, but if a cop marks my car, I swear I would go all hell on them. I have nothing against cops, becuase i love watching cops and worlds wildest police chase, but i would lose every respect i have for cops if they marked up my car without at least a warning!

Haha, get out and tag thier squad car with some spraypaint if they razor your windows. Youre just marking, not damaging.

Right. Sure you would.

And then you would get the s*** beat out of you and you would go to jail.
Over window tint.
Not very smart.

Here's an idea: don't break the law and there won't be anything to worry about. Seems pretty simple to me. (dunno)

losing respect for all cops for one cops indiscretion is as bad as all cops calling you a bunch of kids looking to race and get people killed. you'd take offence to that so don't lump all cops into one category for something one cop did.

heres the reality of it thought guys, have a field day with the cop who pulls you over, chances are good he'd take you to jail.

give him hell about it, he can disallow you to drive the car from that point on wich means your paying for window tint ticket and towing expenses.

take it to court, best outcome is they'd have to pay you the cost of the window tinting for one window. whereas you'd like get the maximum fine for illegal window tint wich is going to be over 100$

unless he scratches your window, your best bet is to just remove it or prepare for larger fines.

you are right, I would go hell on THE cop who did mark my windows (pissed). What I dont get is what is so big about dark windows? I know that it gives the cop the disadvantage, becuase he cant see you, but most people that get illegel tint on their car are only for show and looks and like it when you have your stero blasting and the subs rocking and the other cars cant see you (nana) . I would just be piseed and sad that if i came to my car and the windows were marked (nervous)

...and other people get illegal tint so they can do illegal things in their car w/o anyone seeing them. When a cop walks up to you car, it would be nice if he could see if anyone was in the back seat. Cops would also like to see through your rear window in the event that you reach over to your glove box and pull out a hand gun for example. There are many things, strobe lights, ground effects, etc, that people do for shows that are not road legal...dark tint is just one of them.

The profession needs to be changed so that more education is a prerequisite. Higher standards all around are needed.
