How 'bout them windshields...

I completely agree about the windshields in the Cx-5. To me it seems very brittle. I have had to have 3 rockchips filled in the last 6 months. None of the chips have been on the interstate or even at a speed greater then 45mph.

See my update in post #13 another windshield thread on Mazda's reply to me about windshields. I will have to look for that 2013 windshield TSB to see what it is all about.

Very interesting that there seems to be a trend here.

I am up to 22K miles, with mostly highway travel, and the windshield is still slicker than snot.
Just in case, I'll be sure to keep clear of rock haulers and always maintain healthy following distances. :D

9,000 miles here, taken a few rock hits without any damage (that I can see). 50% highway miles.

It seems that the Internet forums for every car model has people with broken/chipped windshields and some people appear to worry that their car is more vulnerable to this than their neighbor's. Human nature I guess.

I think these forums are great to surface issues, even before recalls/TSBs are announced. It is true, however, it is hard to judge the true extent of the problem.
I owned only one vehicle that had a rock chip the windshield which I got fixed with resin. It never expanded after that. On this and other vehicles we own(ed), there were numerous other impacts, but none has made any real damage, if at all. I am concerned about this, so I have made sure to reduce the glass deductible to $0 in our policy.

I guess I don't see "the problem" you speak of. Glass does break and chip regardless of which model you have. On the F-150 forums people were worried there was something wrong with the glass also. But the F-150 uses modern glass that is the same as that used in other new cars/trucks.

The problem is that it even minor hits seem to cause damage and that a crack spreads within hours, requiring full windshield replacement.
I believe this is a true issue. I do follow other vehicle forums as well and this has been my experience. Like I said, number of affected vehicles is hard to judge, so it may be anything between insignificant (e.g. fixed after some production date) to alarming %.

I didn't think my first post was going to be about a cracked windshield but here it goes...

One week after purchasing a 2014 CX-5, I was driving on a highway and heard a small tick that made me think a pebble hit the windshield. Once I parked the car, I inspected it for any damage on the windshield and front of the car but did not note any visible signs of damage.

Fast forward about 48 hours, I left work to grab lunch, got in my car and there was a crack about 2.5 feet long.

I called safelite (est of $700 installed), autoglass guru (est of $500 installed) and my local Mazda dealership (est of $900 installed) today. No one has the window in stock and based on speaking with these three companies, it appears it will be at least one month until the windshields are available.

Speaking with the Mazda service department manager today, he said "you will have to go through customer service to get on the list for windshields because there are currently between 150 to 200 CX-5's on an east coast waiting list for windshield replacement."

Hearing this statement and reading the forums makes me want to hold off replacing it in hopes there may be a recall for it in the near future. However, I don't trust driving around too long with such a large crack.

Similar experience, except ours was a large star and the crack appeared within 36-48 hours. A week ago, it was 59 cars waiting for windshields....ETA for a new windshield is mid July....

Just curious, are you going through a dealership for replacement? I would if I lived in a state that had no glass deductible but unfortunately NJ's not one of them. Autoglass guru said they use Pilkington replacements for the CX-5 but are on back-order with them until the end of July. I'll most likely wait it out till then. $900 is just too much out-of-pocket for me considering the possibility of it happening again.

i have to go through State Farm. They are using a large (MD, DC, VA) local installer named Royal Glass that was just bought by Safelite (or whatever just joined the Safelite family means). They have to order the glass though Mazda, hence the wait. Even if I did dealership, it would be subcontracted out to a glass installer

I've had my 2014 CX-5 GT for about 6 weeks, the windshield cracked from the bottom center. After sitting in the driveway all day, Fathers Day, I went to pull it into the garage and saw the 12" crack. Today, 10 days later, it's morphed into two anntae looking lines heading across the windshield. The crack is gaining speed and distance everyday. Puente Hills Mazda service manager says it from an impact of sorts. Farming it out to an auto glass company seems like the norm. That's cool, BUT, they won't have a replacement until July 10th. I'm going on vacation this Friday and fear that the windshield will completely fail while on our trip to Missouri. Is this a major design flaw? Or a very cheap OEM peice of glass?

Just to reiterate some points after reading through this thread...Mazda does not seem aware of this as I spoke with them and was informed they never heard such a thing. I don't think anyone in here is surprised that a windshield cracks (it's glass), we are however surprised how easily the windshield cracks from what seems like a small chip that forms into a foot long crack. My old 2005 Mercury Mariner took many rocks to the windshield and none have ever formed a crack. It just chipped the windshield. And to mention the chips on the Mariner occurred at the same spot as it did on my Mazda. I was informed that these windshields are back ordered and will take 2-3 weeks to deliver (outside Philadelphia).

This is industry wide not just a problem for Mazda by the way. Just a simple search on google using the word "windshield cracked" followed by Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Lexus will return hundreds of searches with similar issues. Just saying.. Our 2013 CX-5 goes through highways used by dump trucks constantly has a few tiny rock chips on it but never cracked.

The main issue to me is the waiting delay for spare screens.

Anybody thought about putting on some kind of windshield protector film that goes on the outside? I might have to look into this.

I took a hard rock hit right in the middle of the passenger side and all it did was leave a chip with a small "angel wing" on either side. Glass shop repaired and insurance covered with no deductible. No complaints here. It's all the luck of the draw when it comes to windshield damage.
I have the same thing - the 'angel wings' - on the driver side. So annoying. Didn't think to check with the glass repair place, but now it is on my to-do list!

I did some research a while back - seemed a bit pricey.. around $500 if I remember correctly.

My crack was just like this. Took a pebble in the top right corner. Over night it turned into a one foot crack. Claim was made about a month ago and the crack turned into about three feet. Geico covered it all through Safelite.
All is good now and the windshield is just like new.
