How 'bout spacers?

...Been thinking about wheel spacers... anybody ever use these things? I think an even wider stance on my 5dr would perform and look great. I thought these:
http://www.optauto.com/index.htm?stocknumber=HR30655950 might work.

Being 1.5cm do you thing this is too thick (I still have to go see what kind of gap we have stock.....I don't wanna rub).

(I rock the factory 17's and will prolly keep 'em, however I may go to a 45 instead of the stock 205/50s).

The 5mm spacer seemed like a waste.

I wouldn't recommend spacers. Enven though it is a small amount, your wheels are held on by a certain amount of threads on your studs. The spacer can essentially limit the lugs ability to hold your wheel on safely. A lot of shops, mine included will not work on a car that has spacers for liability reasons. Just some food for thought....

I don't condone the use of spacers either, but in Silver Bull3t's defense, the spacers he is referring are held onto the hob with the existing lugs, and then the wheel is held onto the spacer with another set of lugs. So the safety would not be a concern as these are not just simple metal spacers.

I still wouldnt use them! (yupnope)

There are longer studs available(you'd have to swap them in) if you wanted to do that. We could also fab spacers if you so desired. I may end up having to do it myself anyway as I'm going to find ways to slap 265 rubber on the front of the car to put the power down.

Thanks!

How 'bout....

You guys think going with a 215 tire instead of the spacers would perform similar (and be safer). I guess the 215 is split between the inner and outer tire so it isn't really the same as the spacer which places the whole wheel 1.5cm out.... dammit. I also don't fancy spending $96 on EACH spacer. grrr.

Anybody know where I can find these cheaper!!!

We call those adapters at my work and There are only a few instance where thoxe should ever be used. The closest thing to a "safe" adapter would have to be 1.3" thick and completely cover the factory studs. On a fwd vehicle, not are they not only a bad idea and possibly unsafe, they look horrible as well. If you just want a little bit wider stance, the 1/4" spacers will make some difference and you will still be able to torque the wheels properly. If however you want to do the thick adapters, i can sell them for 60 ea if you need them.

Back from the dead.

Why doesn't anyone here condone the use of spacers? What's the problem if you use longer lug studs and open ended lugnuts?

I've read that because it moves the wheel further out, it puts higher-than-normal stress on the bearings, because it basically has a lever effect and changes the amount of weight that they are exposed to.

A wider stance would prematurely wear out your wheel bearings. Not to mention make it look like a Hot Wheels car. It also messes with the factory's suspension geometry and could be unsafe.

The only legitimate use I can think of for wheel spacers is if you got a killer deal on some high-dollar wheels but they had the wrong offset. Then you could space them out to get back to factory specs. Anything other than that and you're taking a risk.
