housing hurricane victims

dude, simple:

Just ask for references from his professors/job that he said in his mail to you. If they say he's legit, then you have no problem. I am POSITIVE he will not be upset if you ask him for it, and if he has nothing to hide he will certainly give that info to you.

btw, props to you for helping out... If i was back home, i would def. do the same.

I think i might forgo the references since logistically it might be difficult to get in touch with employers/professors at this time and i dont know that those people would have time for a reference letter.

they did reply and things sound on the up and up and they ok'd a criminal background check so I think I will probably go forward with this.

Now how do i DO a background check? where do i go, what do i need?

it depends what level of check you want to do... I know in FL you can have the state do a background check (local) but you have to be a buisness or something to get a national background check. Id check LA website for info.

People helping with spare private-home rooms is nice, but where the hell are all the huge hotel chains? Except for convention times, those places have half their rooms empty. Stick them in there, and let the state/Feds pay for it. That's many, many thousands of rooms in and near the stricken areas and they could stay there during rebuilding and get jobs, etc.

But the hotels won't for the same reasons mentioned here. They don't want the cost or risk of having the place torn up. And at some point they'll have to have people that never leave removed by the sheriff and then bad publicity.
