he was a senator from south carolina. he ran for president in the 40's or 50's and was pretty rascist. he died 6 months ago at the age of 100 while he was still a senator. he has an illegitimate child that is half-black.

strom thurmond was retired before he died. ran for president on the Dixiecrat platform - a segregationist breakaway from the Democratic party. He, like Jesse Helms, eventually abandoned the Democratic party for a Republican platform. He has a lake named after him, named after him while he was still alive. Held the most terms, consecutive and not, in Congress. Gave the longest "filibuster" (basically legal stalling) in the history of American politics at over 26 straight hours of speech. His family acknowledged today the existence of child he had fathered with his black maid when he was 22 and she was 16.
