Hi-Boost Turbo Kit on P5

Hi everyone.

Not exactly a noob here, just haven't posted here in a while.

I have an '03 P5 that I've been enjoying as a daily driver. It's completely stock except for aftermarket stereo system.

Now that the warranty on the car is about to expire, I'm thinking of doing something I've always wanted to do to it: Turbocharge! I really like the P5, love its handling and looks, and I want the power to back up its sleekness. Plus, I'd rather spend the $4k outright rather than start over with new car payments.

So, I've done a little research and decided the Hi-Boost turbo kit is the right one for me.

My questions to you Turbo P5 owners:

How will this kit affect the car's everyday driveability? I mean, I don't want a temperemantel little car I need to baby everyday. I need the car to remain as reliable as it is. So besides the need for premium fuel and sythetic oil, what else do I need to be aware of?

Will car pass California emissions testing?
How will it affect the car's gas mileage?
Do I have to let the engine idle for a minute before shutdown to avoid turbo meltdown?
How long will these turbochargers last?
Hi-Boost says 200 hp to front wheels? This true on 6 Psi of boost?
Will boost hurt the engine when it's still cold?
Will there be additional maintenance?
Will the stock clutch handle the added power?
Will the stock tranny handle it as well?
Finally, does anybody know of good reliable installers of the HI-Boost kit in southern California? Specifically, south Orange County, CA?

Thanks in advance to everyone that responds.

that kit on hiboost says it comes with everything needed so i would think that you don't "need" any extra upgrades but i bet it sure would help. it also says that with the kit it should have no problems with emissions but they don't guarantee it. makes sense. i say go for it. when your ready to smog just take it to a whole in the wall garage and pay cash. even if the emissions are good a name brand chain probably wouldn't be the best idea. just keep the boost low for everyday. keep us posted and take lots of pics. heck just record with good instructional audio so when i'm ready to do mine. HA!

It should still pass emissions testing, gas mileage will go down the drain since you'll want to drive like you stole it, yo don't have to let the engin idle if you've got a bunch of extra turbos sitting around, turbo will last as long as you look after it - might need rebuild after 20,000Mi, 200HP is very possible, Don't drive into boost when the engine is cold, no additional maintenence other than oil more frequently, clutch will handle like 300 WHP, tranny will probably pack it in if you're boosting over 15psi, and I don't know of any installers in cali, sorry.

where r u in cali?

if you're in socal i know of a shop that has done msp turbo upgrades and even developed a FMIC for the msp, so they know the engine and could do the install im sure.

Legally, HiBoost will NOT PASS Emissions is CALIFORNIA (or any aftermarket turbo kit for the P5 for that matter).

It will fail the visual test since the part is not CARB approved and the car does not have a turbo option.

However, I have heard there are ways around this.

yeah, just tell them the turbo's a dumby and you actually use it to smuggle cocaine.

I'm in Mission Viejo, California. About 1.5 hours north of San Diego.

That really blows about it not CA emission legal. This car is required to be tested every 2 years. Damn! I'll need to talk to the place that regularly does my emissions testing for my cars, see how "flexible" they are.

May have to settle for CAI and exhaust, which doesn't really get me where I want to be. I was looking forward to smoking some V6 minivans, hi powered SUV's, and a few sport compacts with fart cans. :)

I have the FM turbo on my 02 P5. Smog rules now require first inspection 6 years after model year, so for me, first smog inspection isn't until 2008. Then every two years after that. (Law changed this past January thanks to Gov. Arnold. Old law required first inspection 4 years after model year instead of 6 years after model year.)

Car should pass the sniffer part of the test, but will indeed not pass the visual inspection. I will need to find a shop willing to bend the rules on the visual inspection in order to get mine through inspection.

What the **** is the big deal with inspections anyways? What do they do if you don't pass?
oh, just deem you're car a gross polluter and not give you current dmv tags, therefore allowing cops to pull you over and possibly a ticket or impounding...

THere WAS a protege turbo kit from flyinmiata a few years ago that kept the precat and therfore would pass cali emmisions.

If you can find one it may be an option.

The Flying Miata turbo kit for the protege did keep both CATS, however, since the part was NOT CARB approved, It would still fail the visual inspection.
