2008 Mazda 5 Grand Touring
Hey, everyone!

Although I've read this forum for a long time, now, I never registered until now. So, HI! I'm a proud owner of a 2008 Mazda 5 Grand Touring with currently about 28,700 miles. Before this, I had a 2006 Mazda 5 Touring that I bought in July 2005 here in Queens, NYC (and, I'm proud to say, was told I was the first owner of the 5 in NY). I traded it up to the 2008 as soon as I learned about it's upgrades, which made this great car even better! So far, I've been super happy with my Max - that's my 5's name. ;)

Anyway, I have a question, and I'm hoping someone here can shed some light: Is anyone suffering form an abnormally loud and constantly running engine radiator fan? My previous 5 never exhibitted this problem, and my current 5 hasn't exhibitted it, either, until about a month ago when the weather started getting slightly warmer. The car/engine's fine, but after driving it about 15 to 20 minutes, the fan starts going and it doesn't shut off until I turn the engine off. I don't think this is normal, especially since the weather's not hot yet and since my 5 isn't overheating or anything, and I'm not racing with it or running the A/C.

I love the fact that 5's are pretty quiet at idle. Many of my passengers have complimented the car saying that they can't even tell it's on when it's idling because it's so quiet. But, now, it's a different story. The fan roars constantly. Is this something that I should take it to Mazda for? Any advice? Thanks!

I haven't had this problem, but I would start by trying to check relays and sensors associated with fan and temp. There is a downloadable manual that could help. Have you checked for codes (ie, P0480, etc.)? There is a fan control module as well... check to see the wiring from the fan motor is connected to the module.

Try disconnecting, inspecting reconnecting. If that fails, disconnect your battery for 5 minutes and see if you get a reset.

If it were my car, I'd take it in as it is under warranty. LOL

INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE
CONNECTOR FOR POOR CONNECTION

Turn the ignition switch off.

Disconnect the fan control module connector.

Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/

pulled-out pins, corrosion).
Is there malfunction?

From the manual:
Operation

The fan control module drives the fan motor based on the cooling fan control signal sent by the PCM according

to the following:
Engine coolant temperature

Vehicle speed

Battery voltage

Whether refrigerant pressure switch is on or off

Whether magnetic clutch is on or off

The fan control module allows continuously variable control of the fan motor rotation rate reducing fan operation
noise and power consumption..

You may not be getting the signal from the PCM to that module.

^^ yeah, if levels seem to be OK and car is not overheating it might be a sensor acting up.

Now, I'm not sure what is better, my 08 gets this obnoxious on/off fan cycles while in idle when hot and full blast A/C :). The 06 might be doing the same on/off thing, but is not as noisy, weird...

Thanks, guys. I'll be sure to have it checked out, cuz I ain't gon' check all those things myself! ;) Just wanted to know if it was something serious enough to take to Mazda for them to check.

Now, I really hope they don't come back with the dreaded, yet unfortunately very common and overused words: "Sorry, we couldn't replicate the problem. Everything's fine." I hate that! I wouldn't be WASTING my time if I thought the car was fine!

Well, I'll update you all whenever I take it in. Thanks!

Any other advice anyone else might have out there?

Be sure to check the fluid level.

After that, double check that something is not hitting the fan, making it louder than it should be. It's possible that a leaf or some piece of trash is hitting the blades, like the old playing card in the bike spokes. It's a long shot, but worth the check.

Good luck!
