2003 Mazda Protege 5
I was happy to find this car in silver with 49,000 miles on it from a dealer, and an old man owned it garage kept, and i paid around 8500 for it. Mechanic checked it out, and said i did great at finding this car. Anyway since it's my new baby, I was curious as to .. What brand speakers are in the car stock, and sizes? and If you've changed them on your Protege 5, what brand did you put in?.

Thanks

Ron

Hey bro glad to see a new p5 enthusiast, sounds like you found yourself a nice lil ride. I'm not sure the sizes for the stock ones cauz when i baught my p5 the previous owner allready had aftermarket ones on. but i did replace those for some crisper sounding powerbass ones. they make a real good product for the price so I would definately give them a look if I wer you. but yea man Welcome to the club

I have a Protege ES. The speakers that I went with were Clarion's up front and Pioneer's in the back. Not sure of the size but they sound great when paired with a Kenwood Excelon 4 channel amp.

6x8's all around. I don't think they are a brand name stock, I think they're just Mazda speakers. Anyways I went with Type S Alpines and ditched the factory tweeter but if I were you I would throw something like Infinity Reference 6.5 components up front... not too expensive and the tweeter is small enough for the factory spot. Then put some cheap-ish rears in like MTX or something along those lines for rear fill, amp, and enjoy.

Some of the P5's have 6x8's in the front and 6.5 in the rear (mine did). As for what speakers to choose, everyone is going to have their own personal preferences, take all suggestions with a grain of salt. I personally use Aura components and love them, but most people have never even heard of them. The best thing to do is go to a few stores that sell car speakers with some of your own cd's that you are familiar with and listen to several different brands. Decide which ones YOU like best and go with those. Everybody hears sounds differently so only you can decide which sound best. Good luck and keep us in the loop on your decision.

i'm gonna agree with that too^ everyone has a favorite brand. if you install them well, pretty much any reputable aftermarket speaker will sound good. i recommended some foam baffles, and maybe some sound deadening to help create a solid baffle to separate the front and rear waves. even sound hertz or focal will sound disappointing in a crappy install.

Welcome! Post pix when you can!

A lot of good experience on this forum and not much immature honda-boi smack-talk FTW! yo.

I would suggest asking us before any money is spent - i assure you. We have done it before /made mistakes/know better now ;)

Stock speakers were not 'bad' - first upgrade should be a nice four channel amp.
Then add a bass speaker/amp, and then look at upgrading the stock door speakers. Sedan and P5 sizes are different.

The stock radio is rated at ~8W/ch Continous RMS - so really, the amp will have a greater influence...

ya my p5 had 5x7's in front and 6"s in the rear doors. I just slapped in some JBLs (on a budget eh) and am quite happy with them. The dynamat stuff really made a difference for me.

I dont have a p5 but i have 6.5's in the front and 6x9's in the rear and i have always been a fan of infinitys so i have them all around the front are 2way and the rear are 3way i love the crisp sound you get and the highs are second to none IMO...im gonna install a 8" on the trunk eventually i had some 12's with a big box a while back but i didnt need all the bass so i just need to fins a cheap small amp to push the 8"

this is the 8 im gonna get

Thanks guys. Speedracr, those speakers seem awesome. Overall i'm looking for something that sounds good in the car. Not just to be loud. I've already been there done that, That's why the 2x15's and 1600 watt amp are staying in the closet, because i wouldn't be able to use the hatch, the box would be in the way. I don't know if they make subs that have a whole in the center, like the stock one is, but i dig the s*** out of it being hidden like that.

If anyone has double din dvd units, reverse camera, subs, speakers or anything else like that in theirs and it was worth the buy, let me know. I want a player that fits the dash perfectly, not a quarter of it, or half of it. So if you guys have anymore tips or knowledge in that, let me know.

Thanks again everyone!

Or do a custom box with 2x10" that sits on top of the 'floor' and just raises the floor by 4" to keep the wagon functionality? Put the amps under the seats.

I've had 2 double din's since I bought the car. First was a Pioneer P4000-DVD, fantastic HU, the gui is a little dated but I loved the equalizer on it and the huge adjustability of bass levels. The one in the car now is a JVC KW-NT1 that I got for $150 from work... pretty much sums up why I bought it. Well, that and the handfree. Anyway I hate it and I would love to go back to the Pioneer, its just too cold to go out and change HUs and I really do need the handsfree. The fit was really good, the dash kit for double dins in our cars leaves about 1/4 inch on each side of plain black ABS plastic. I'll post a couple pics tomorrow if you want.

That would be great canadian357! Thanks alot for the info. I'm a reviewer, so before i buy anything with a little price on it, i like to review and find out the bads and goods before hand, and you just did exactly what i wanted. Thanks and pictures would be much a appreciated. Thanks again!
