Hesitation when accelerating from a stand still

My wife's 2002 protege5 hesitates when accelerating from a stop, like a traffic light or stop sign. It doesn't happen every time, but lately it seems to happen more and more. What happens is when you press on the gas to start going, the car just bogs down for about a second or two and then starts going again. We've tried the fuel cleaner and that doesn't seem to work. I've also replaced the fuel pump filter and air filter and that has had no effect either. Her car has about 88,000 miles on it. Please help!!!

I also read that it could be the MAF? Any suggestions on that? Would it just be better to order a new EGR and MAF and install them, or are they expensive and I'd be better off cleaning them?

egr, dirty maf, injectors (fuel tank cleaners aren't the best way, I've read where some can actually do damage)

way cheaper and easier to clean them yourself first.

car throwing any cels?

the car has 88K miles, all service changes are up to date (ie. plugs, wires, belts, etc.)

We bought the car at about 50K miles, and I have not done these things. I will do the plugs, wires, etc., this spring when it warms up. I'm probably due for a timing belt change as well, right?

my 99lx/1.6l is due every 60k miles or 48 months, whichever comes first. you can search for yours but I'd think it would be similar.

previous owner have maintenance records?

take the injectors out and have them sent off to be cleaned (WitchHunter.com is where I sent mine). some cleaners can be harmful.

I doubt that's the problem. at least, I wouldn't recommend that as a first step lol.Clean the MAF and EGR and go from there.

^ agreed. MAF and EGR are cheap, diy solutions. definitely do those first. plus the timing belt being it's past due. then look at other parts that might be past due (coils, plugs, etc.). but if someone is gonna clean the injectors do it right.

actually, I'd start with plugs first, and then run down the list. I have a feeling that may be the ticket. I feel dumb for not thinking of that before

Only if the porblem started after the last tune up ('all maint up to date') would i suspect the plugs. Pull them and inspect - but i would suspect a bad coil at this point.

EGR would have it idling rough - i didn't see that in the OP. The MAF? Unless he has over-oiled a filter - it should not get dirty/require maintenance...

So that is why i say clogged injectors or bad coil. Probbaly injectors becasue it is only a problem off the line. Bad coil would be all over the RPM range.

You're saying if the plugs aren't old as dirt it wouldn't cause this? It's actually ridiculous how many ails changing the plugs can cure when they're old. Since it's less than a $10 and 10 min. fix, I still say do them first.

My P5 kinda did this when I had a smashed plug which was hit by one of the butterfly valves from the intake flying THROUGH my engine. Fixed it right away.

Also check to see if the Mazda recall on the intake manifold was done. That will cause a bunch of problems. Are you hearing any clicking when idling?
