Hey everyone, I was just wondering if there is any way to update windows XP without going through their site. Also, would it be unsafe to use a version of XP thats not updated at all? Thanks

I dont know of anywhere to get any of the patches without going to windowsupdate. Cant you install patches without a valid key? As long as you dont install SP1? I dont know for sure.

I would not use an unpatched XP box on the internet without a software and hardware firewall, and updated virus scan software. Even then, expect to be hacked in a short time.

Your best bet is to find someone with a corporate license version. Otherwise, you are at risk.

Today, you're absolutely crazy to not keep your system current. You can go to Microsoft's
Windows (Security & Updates) site if you want to manually download updates, or you can simply go to Windows Update once a week.

Ultimately, Microsoft for once has put together a sage 3 step process, which I totally agree with. You can also find a home user guide at CERT/CC.

Best of luck!

Only thing is, I think he doesn't have a valid key, so as far as I know, even if he could get SP1, it wouldn't install. He hasn't said this, but just assuming. He can install the other patches though. That would be better than nothing.

Just do a search for non-blacklisted keys, they are out there, my friend has one. Allows the online updates to work fine, and SP1 works fine.

Windows XP isn't that expensive that you cannot afford to purchase it. If you're short on cash, go with Linux. You don't have to pay for it and you don't have to worry about getting blasted by the latest Windows worm or virus. There is a short learning curve but aside from games, it has everything to offer that XP does.

A slick looking interface that is far more customizable
Several web browsers that meet the standards of Internet Explorer
Many email clients to choose from that are safer than Outlook Express
An Office suite that has all the features of MS Office without "Clippy" the anoying office assistant.
Plus so much more...all free.

I've downloaded SP1.. just can't install. I have all the other patches. I need SP1 and I believe theres a SP2 that i'm missing.

If I found a non-blacklisted key, how would I change my CD Key, seeing as I already installed XP. I really don't wanna start over again, as it was a b**** to do in the first place.

Thanks for your help (2thumbs)

Alright.. this is getting pretty bad... I've had windows XP for about 24 hours now, and I just ran some spyware detectors, and I found a crap load. I looked everywhere for a "fix" to my problem, but that mostly led me to shady sites with porno pop-ups. I've come up with various ways to check my own CD-key, and replace my CD-key... but no dice on the key itself. so can someone PLEASE help me out here...

Linux sounds like a good idea, but I'm already familiar with windows, and I don't really have the time to mess around with and learn linux. Also, from what I understand, theres many different versions of Linux, and it all depends on where you download it from. I think I'll wait till the summer to mess around with Linux. In the mean time.. PLEASE HELP ME with windows.

If XP Pro was $100 I'd buy it. Until then, too bad Microsoft. There's a reason everyone there is rich, the discs cost 5 cents, the box costs 20 cents, and apparently each share of the design of the "upgraded Win 2000" costs $250. I don't think so.

amen to that.. I mean, development does cost money, but DAMN.. $250 a pop?? I think they'd make more money if they lowered the price for windows... and I'm sure they wouldn't lose money, seeing as almost every major computer company that sells personal computers has to buy a copy of windows for every unit they sell.

**** YOU BILL GATES... I HOPE YOU SEE THIS TOO YOU ASS MOLE

Dont b**** about the price. Either use it or dont. Obviously no one is forcing you to pay *cough cough*. but could YOU program windows on your own? i didnt think so, so stfu.

PS Im not a microsoft advocate or anything, just pointing out the fact of the matter. I use windows and linux. I could actually switch over everything to linux, and probably will for my next box.

whoa dude.. chill.. I was just venting a bit cause I spent all night trying to get this crap to work. If I worked, and could afford windows XP, I would buy it. I completely understand why the ask for so much money, but think about it. If they lowered the price a bit, there wouldn't be as many people out there who can't afford windows, and need to get a pirated version. That leads to more sales, and less development of anti-piracy software. Theres no need to tell anyone to shut the **** up here. Nobody's comments were out of line, except for yours. Ask anyone if they feel that the cost of windows is a bit too high, and I'm sure they'll agree.

BTW: if you just wanted to let everyone know you use linux, you coulda just said that and saved your little "don't b****.. stfu" act for your mother.

"**** YOU BILL GATES... I HOPE YOU SEE THIS TOO YOU ASS MOLE"

You could have saved that for YOUR mother. Actually, I'll tell her myself.

Of course everyone will agree the cost of windows is high. I dont care if you pirate it, go ahead, so is mine. The point im making is that saying MS Sucks or **** YOU BILL GATES is kinda lame, especially when you use thier product every single day.

Your problem stemmed from the fact you had pirated the copy in the first place. Is it microsofts fault. Is it Bill's fault? No, its your own, so what are you really venting for?

Im not angry or mad, im quite chill. Im just pointing out the logic here. And no, i didnt just want to let everyone know i use linux, that wasnt my point.

I never said MS sucks.. cause if it did, why would I be using it? And the "**** you bill gates" part was obviously just for kicks. I'm sorry if my jokes suck ass, I guess I'll never get a job in stand up, but as for my logic I think I'm fine. I think that windows is overpriced.. and you think its a bargain.. lets just leave it at that.

eh.. i see where you're comin from.. no hard feelings dexter.. you seem like a chill guy, I guess I'm just a douche.. I just felt like I had to say something when I read stfu

i like how my help thread turned into this
