Help with replacing stereo

This may be a dumb question, but here goes:

I just bought my '03 PR5 a few weeks ago. The previous owner had replaced the 6 disc factory changer with a factory CD/tape player out of another Protege (with green illumination). I bought a PR5 factory changer from one of our fellow forum members and expect to get it this week. Does anyone have a how-to manual for pulling and replacing the factory stereo? Or should I just take the unit to Best Buy or Fry's and let them do the swap?

Thanks!

Thanks

there is a sticky for it. http://www.msprotege.com/vbb300/showthread.php?t=8940
just go there. it shows the picture for the radio removal tools that you can build out of coat hangers. there is a link to a thread right below the picture to explain everything.
Thanks for the referral, and thanks for not flaming. I originally looked for help in the "how-to" forum, but didn't find anything. Should've looked in the audio / electronics forum first. Duh!

You guys are much more kind than the IS300.net folks were.

np.. we try to help most we can. although there are some thread nazi's around here.. everyone here in teh audio section is really helpful.. very nice guys.

Sounds like the swap should be pretty quick and easy. I didn't realize that our PR5 radio units were like the Ford units. My buddy had an old '93 mustang that had a similiar method for removing the unit.

Anyone have an estimate on how long it would take to swap the two units out of curiousity?

Hit auto zone or a pepboys and see if they have ford radio removal tools. YOu just need 2 sets and it makes removing the radio MUCH easier.

Aaaarrrrgh!

Okay, call me an idiot. I can design multi-million dollar aircraft, but I can't get the blasted stock radio out of my PR5. After fussing with it for a couple of hours, I was unable to get the radio out. I think the spring clip on the right side got jammed out, so I can't get the tool to clip in place. I guess I'll be taking it somewhere to get it out and the new (6 disc unit) one in. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?

Thanks,

What did you use to try and get it out?

As you suggested, I tried to use the tools from Autozone. They fit just fine, but I think I accidentally pried the right side clip away from the unit the first time I tried to remove it. After that, I was unable to engage that clip or compress it so the unit could slide out.

Most of the time you can get the dealer to help ya out. when I took my HU out I was not amember of this site. and did not know to get it out that way. so I took the trim piece off and did it that way. I dont even member what I did to get it out.. but I know I did alot of cussing. and if they tab is bent out you may have to take the trim piece off and get it out that way.
