Help With BOV

Hey guys, I belong to a few other Mazda forums and I am looking for some more help.

I so badly want to put a Blow Off Valve on my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3, but due to it running a stock BPV would it cause any damage if I replaced it with a BOV? Also, it has been suggested that the stock BPV be replaced with a hybrid (50/50) valve, any comment on that?

Here is why I am kind of confused, I am new to the car scene and this kind of confuses me, can anyone shed some light?

You can run a bov in place of the bpv just make sure it is ran full recirc. But if you are going out to buy an aftermarket one you might as well buy another bpv that way it will work best with the car.

so basically even if I buy an aftermarket BOV and run it recirc I will still lose the BOV sound. TO be completely honest, its the sound that I'm looking for, I know that I can pull my recirc hose on my stock BPV and itll do the same thing, but I dont want to mess with stuff like that.

So long story short...if I get an aftermarket BOV and run it full recirc, do I get the BOV sound?

You will hear the aftermarket BOV more than the stock bpv but if you still have stock intake you wont hear too much regardless. If you want some sound buy an intake, it sounds great.

NOW, does anyone here have a BOV that can give me any suggestions on make/model? Have you experienced any boost lag?

You have these that Kyrosfactor listed and a lot of other people like the hks bov and the turbosmart one. Just get on youtube and listen to some so you get the idea of sound you want. You usually wont have boost lag from a aftermarket bov or bpv you just need to make sure it doesnt leak air and cause a boost/vac leak. And make sure when going WOT you do not hear it fluttering like it is opening up. Some guys will experience a flutter when going under boost at lower rpms which is ok.

Best solution is to recognize that the Mazdaspeed stock bpv is very sophisticated and it the optimum boost diverter solution for this engine. It is a dual diaphragm design. It holds boost extremely well. In comparison testing done by Grassroots Motorsport Magazine a while back, they found that the stock bpv held boost better under engine load in third gear and higher than the most popular and generally reliable aftermarket bpv, the Forge.

Having said that, if you want sound, as stated above, the solution is not the bpv. It's the intake. Believe me and the others. Get a good SRI or CAI intake and stick with the stock valve. It will be VERY noticable.

I'm running an 18-19 psi target boost with taper to 17 psi at 6,000 rpm on the stock K04 turbo. 13.4 quarters at 107. 60-100 mph in 6.1 seconds. 40-120 in 12.5 seconds. Any higher boost than 19 maybe 20 psi is simply going to turn the turbo into a blast furnace and not produce any more power. The stock valve holds at those levels extremely well. I can't make this bpv leak. Not at 56,000 HARD miles.

If you don't have a good intake get one. That will gain you both the sound you want and 15-20 whp gain from the intake. Spend your money on something that will actually improve performance. BPV's don't do that on this engine, and a true VTA BOV is not a good thing for a MAF sensor controlled engine. You will be farting already metered air to atmosphere. That metered air has been matched with fuel that has been shot into the combustion chamber through the fuel injectors. You'll run rich. The ECU will hunt trying to correct the mismatch. You are highly likely to have misfires and engine roughness and will absolutely not gain any performance. Stick with a true bpv. The best one out there is free. It came stock on your car.

awsome!!! thank you so very much!! I did plan on getting a COBB CAI, but was recommended to get a SRI due to me living in canada snow and sh*t been told it could be "risky".

but anyway thats my plan and we'll see where it goes from there with this information.

like others said the intake is whats going to make the difference, i have the sri due to miami rain and i recently reinstalled my hks bov full recirculation, its only slightly louder than the stock bpv and it does produce a different sound, my opinion its not really worth spending your money on the bov unless you get it extremely cheap which is hard.
