HELP-Whistle sound from engine bay

kpracer, i got the same thing, it just started a few days ago...does anyone kno why it would be doing that?? i really dont wanna have to replace the wastegate. is it possible that a loose connection in the wastegate line is holding that actuator open just a little bit so it whistles...o and by the way, it seems to be giving my car some stalling problems...i was out just a few minutes ago and it stalled on me, im positive it is because of whatever is causing that whistling noise

My car just started whistling at idle. Only starts after car is driven awhile.
When I got to work today I pulled it in shop and checked it. The sound is
definately coming from acuator. I listened with stethoscope and everything
else sounds fine. Its pulling 22 lbs. vacuum and sound goes away when any throttle applied.

same problem here, only sometimes (usually whenever i get someone else to listen!!). JUST at idle...when i push gas, it's gone. kinda quiet, but can definentaly hear it inside the car. It's almost a cross between a whistle and a telephone, but quiet. Let me know if you find anyhting....im taking mine to the dealer soon, but i dunno if it will make the sound for them so they can check it out.

P.S. i posted another about a problem where at idle, after sitting for a bit (at a light i.e.) the RPM's dip down WAY low -- like 200 -- and then saves itself. does that like 3 times right quick, then goes away.

I have been having this high pitched whistling sound from the engine bay. It is there when there is no load on the engine. I usually hear it when I am at a stop.
If I apply slight throtle the sound is still there. In this sould clip I could not get the sound to stay for a long time but it is definatly there.
I had this before my Injen was put on. I do not want to take the intake off so I can go to the dealer. I thought I would ask all of you before I go through all that work.
It sounds like it might be a vacume leak, but im not sure. Here is the sound clip. I have the video that comes with this if it is needed.

I just finished looking at those "Found A Camera" pictures where the creepy man is in the mirror and by the trees. Then I come check out this sound.

Dark room + Weird "photos" + That whistle = The Ring in my head. Static noises, static TV.. That guy appearing and then the whistle. A little rolling ball.

Errr. Yeah.

That's Automatic Idle Control..

Hey, are you the guy I chased down and talked to as you were dropping your girl off at work?

nah, that ain't me.....i live in spicewood though (NW austin) look me up sometime....

Thanks for this, mine sounds just like it. Should I go stock intake from aem before I take it in, or don't bother?

My car sounded like that for a few times.
I was chasing down the sound and I can tell you that I am 80% it is coming from the stock BPV.......

Is it whistling the entire time? I just put on an intake and hardpipes. I started to notice a high pitch squealing. Mine seems to be off and on, but goes away when I touch the gas. It is not nearly as loud as the sound clip, but if I notice it inside the car, it would probably be pretty loud in the engine bay.

Any concrete solutions for this problem? I am bringing my car in tomorrow and I'll ask them to take a look at this as well. However, I'm anticipating a "couldn't replicate the complaint".

Yeah, it's intermittent. I'll wait until it's more consistent or more annoying to bring it in.

So has anyone positively identified the cause of this sound yet? I listened to the sound clip and mine is making exactly the same noise. Its been doing it for the last 3 days and only does it at idle. Once I apply some throttle it goes away. I was thinking that it was either the waste gate diaphragm or the ball bearings starting to go bad in the turbo. I guess if it is the BB in the turbo, I already know what I will have to do there. But if it is the waste gate, how would I fix that? Can just the waste gate be replaced without replacing the whole turbo? (dunno) I dunno, but this really SUX!

Make the noise happen, then pinch off vacuum hoses. PCV, bpv, wastegate, map sensor, FPR, brake booster. Anything w/ a hose on it. Def sounds like a vacuum leak, not anything to do w/ turbo ball bearings. Get some plastic pliers so you don't damage the hose. Also check around the intake manifold gasket area for leaks as well. Goodluck

I think you are right. I took a pair of pliers and pinched off all of the hoses one by one. when i pinched off the one to the waste gate actuator the noise stopped. i think that i need to replace the vac line to the waste gate actuator and see if that fixes it. if it the noise is still there then it would definitely be a problem with the waste gate actuator diaphragm. if it is, does anyone know if the waste gate actuator can be replaced without replacing the whole turbo?

I had she same sound on my car it ended to be the wastegate actuator diaphgram that was defective! I recognize the loud whistle sound! Don't look for anything else!! that's the problem!! Take it to the dealer if is still under warranty, they will replace the actuator for free with an upgraded one!!

Well mine isnt under warranty anymore, so i guess I will have to give the dealer a call and see what it would cost to just replace that actuator or at least sell it to me. I would rather just replace it myself if I can. is there a how-to on replacing the actuator?

the actuator is the problem. I had the same problem when my car had 25k. At that time they said they could not just replace the actuator, so they replaced the whole turbo.

they only replaced the actuator on my car. I wish i could have just gotten a whole new turbo. :(
