Okay so my car has done this once before but it was nearly 8 months ago or so. I was under the impression that rod knock did not simply go away and especially for not for that long but I'm not sure what else it could be. Here is a link of the sound...

Right now I am just waiting for the car to cool off before I try starting her up again to see what happens. The last time this happened it was doing it for awhile and I went to drive home to check up on the car but it had stopped and I was quite confused. So I kept driving the car and have put alot of miles on the car until it happened again now. Thanks for any info and suggestions are appreciated.

Make sure the crank pulley and fan isn't hitting anything. If nothing is hitting anything it's time for rod bearings

Pretty sure the fan isn't hitting anything defineatly sounds like its coming from under the valve cover. Anyone know a ballpark region of how much that will cost to fix, or am I better off getting a new car? Just really sucks because its still fairly low mileage at 122,000kms (75,000miles) :(.

The tick of death...

Sell me your car I need spare parts (rolleyes)

Seriously lol? You're not too far away from me, how much would you offer? I'm going to pull the valve cover today and try and see if its something not as major.

Took the valve cover off, checked the shim gap with a feeler guage and stuff seems abit loose but it all seems fairly consistent. Is there an easy way to check for sure if its rod knock? I don't want to be replacing the engine or get a new car if I don't have to.

does the frequency of the tapping get more vigorous as the rpms increase?

that doesnt sound like valve tapping at all. Sounds more like spun rod/main bearing.

Yes it does, sorry should've revved up the car in the video. Okay so I started the car up again its started doing the sound again but it eventually went away luckily I took a video of it and also showing the original sound in the video while revving it up.

As you can hear in the video the car slowly starts to stop the brutal ticking/buzzing sound transitions to no sound at all except for my whining alternator. Started the car back up a few hours later and no sound at all, just the typical "ticking "lifters sound of the fs-de. Like I said in my original post this EXACT thing has happened before, I but now that its gone I don't think I should simply ignore it as I did before. However I am quite puzzled as to what the issue might be...

If you decide to sell it throw me a PM, I need parts like I said. I really couldnt say what it is without looking inside.

there is defenatly an issue going on with a bearing in the crankcase. I wouldn't ignore it if it just started it it maybe possible to save the engine if it hasn't started cutting into the crankshaft. But it might already be too late. if you continue driving you'll eventualy throw the rod.

I'm not experienced enough to know why the sound goes away but if I had to guess it may be from the metal heating up. Hopefully someone with more experience has more to say on this.

So I drove it to work and back today (only about 10 min each way) and nothing was out of the ordinary, car sounded just like she always has. Right now I am just driving it to and from work until I figure out what the issue is for sure. I am thinking of getting a new car just so I don't have to constantly be second guessing my car after this ordeal.

My first motor had a similar sounding knock like this. To get evidence to see if something is wrong in the block, whey don't you change the oil and transfer a good amount of oil into a shallow pan or container of sort? If you take that oil in the sun and swish it around, you'll see small metal particles glistening in the sun light; that's a bad sign!

I ended getting another motor from Japan but if you want to save some money I'm sure someone can rebuild it. Or maybe just get another block.

Never noticed anything like that when I have changed the oil myself a few times but I will keep that in mind. I have been driving the car to and from work all this week with no weird sounds coming back. Just very unsettling driving my car until I find out for sure what it was and to stop it from occuring again.

I guess it also should be noted that upon startup the rpms will go up and then drop to below 500rpm or so and then to return to normal idle. This is when the car is already warmed up however, upon cold start the car revs up to 1500rpm or so and slowly goes down to normal idle which I believe is normal. It should be noted as well that the car has been doing this for awhile so I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the sound...
