Help please

Hey Guys,

im normally on Bimmerforums but a friend of mine just got a 2010 MSP3 and put in a full tank of 87 octane in his car without thinking. he is noticing lag in his boost and that it isnt running the same. owners manual says only to use that octane in an emergency. i've tried searching but no luck. should we try and cyphine(however its spelled) his tank, run the fuel out, etc? i normally wouldnt think anything of it since im used to NA cars but i really dont nkow mazdas im a bmw guy . thanks for any help.

87 octane shouldn't cause any problems at all. The car should run fine.

The only adjustment would be to lighten up your right foot (as not to depend on the knock sensor so much).

i would run in 5th gear on the freeway to burn some gas, instead of shifting into 6th for fuel economy....

just don't hit boost until it is gone. I would siphon "spelling??" out what I could, fill it up with 92 then not hit boost for that tank of gas.

the ecu is in limp mode until you get better gas. dont bother with any boosters its not going to help. gonna have to run thru the tank. drive easy and dont get into boost. after a tank of fresh 91/93 reset the ecu.

EDIT: Matsuda is incorrect. 87 will cause large amounts of kr and put the ecu into limp mode

Depending on how full the MS3 tank is, it would take a lot of highly volatile additive to bring the octane up.

The best octane boost, IMHO is toluene, which you can get at most good hardware stores.

But it might take at least 2 GALLONS of 114 octane toluene, maybe as much as 3-4 gallons of that stuff to bring the octane up to premium fuel octane, according to the calculator. Not worth it, and toluene in that strength is not good for the certain parts of the fuel system. Expect to pay about $25-$30 per gallon for the stuff, cheaper if you want to buy a whole 55 gallon drum! lol. And it's not really very safe to try to add straight toluene to an existing tank of gasoline. This is a very strong chemical.

Safely raising octane one or two points with tolulene is feasible but expensive, trying to move octane 4 points or more would not be a good idea, IMHO.

There is probably an anti-siphon device in the tank, so that may not be an option. Just run it gently (interstate in fifth gear sounds like it might work) 'til it's down to half a tank, then fill it with 93. It still won't be happy for a while, but it should be OK.

if it was my car, i'd drive it easy on the hiway as suggested in 5th gear. as soon as the gas tank is > 1/4 empty, pull over to the nearest quality service station and fill to the brim w/ the highest octane available. Repeat as necessary. Still & all, shouldn't be that big of a deal if you stay off boost??? (detect)

Probably right, but might want to check to see if there is a drain plug in the bottom of the tank, under the car. Most cars have one, but I have not checked ours to see if that is the case.

Man, with gas being stolen often, there better NOT be a drain plug on any of my gas tanks!

ya i kinda ruled out the siphoning option. i figured the newer cars had a device or some type of wall preventing a hose from going all the way into the tank. i'll just tell him to drive it till it gets down to 1/4 or less and then fill up with higher octane. tehre is a shell over here that sells 101 should make it get happier a bit faster than 93 octane. although he is going to pay out the butt on the per gallon cost. lol.
