help me pick an amplifier

I'd get one with an adjustable crossover. If the sub was a 2 ohm load, you would have much better choices. I would go with the alpine MRP-M350 which gives you 350 watts rms for $199 retail
THat's 350 RMS at 2 ohms...unfortunately...it'll only put out 200W at 4ohms. Look at that stuff on Sounddomain. The first JBL is decent (I've seen other people on here with it). Check out the Phoenix Gold Tantrum stuff, too...the 300.2 should do you, as it's rated for 300W @ 4ohms.

I said "IF" it was 2 ohms :D. I will edit to be more clear.

I see...I misread...You were insinuating that *if* that *was* the case, that's what you would suggest. I get it now...not being the case, however, you came up with a bunch of viable options on sounddomain! ;)

HD3002
500 Watt EFX Amplifier

  • 500 Watts Max Power
  • 80 Watts x 2 Ch RMS Output Power (@ 0.09% THD from 20 Hz ~20 kHz into 4 Ohms)
  • 110 Watts x 2 Ch RMS Output Power (2 Ohm)
  • 220 Watts Bridged RMS Output Power (4 Ohm)
  • Dimensions: (HxWxL) 2 7/16" x 10" x 10"
little less then what you want but its true power, my guy was telling me about them its what i linked you too, im doing more research on them see whats the dilly.

they run 115-120 so ffar ive read nothing but good things.

what about a kicker dx700?

350x1 @ 4ohm
700x1 @ 2ohm

i am also looking at an MTX 6500D

any opinions?

Hmmm....the DX is an older model, so I'm not sure. Could be good...could be bad. 1sty should know better than I. On a side note, are you looking to low-ball as much as possible or are you looking for something in particular? Try to seriously *not* penny pincg, though...the ebay route and non-warrantied pieces bought from unauthorized vendors could come back to bite you on the ass...places like sounddomain and thezeb have really decent prices for what works for your situation and they're authorized for what they sell.

and read all the details check voltage and all that s*** alot stats require 14.4 and with our alternator youll get 12.4. companies put so many decepetions in thier stats, thier not lying to you but thier require things that most cant understand. JBL is sworn by alot people and what they say they put out they do. but stuff from places thatll back you if something goes wrong.

JL is about the only amp that will be its best at 4 ohms other then a 2 channel amp that is bridged.

That's true. But, their amps are ridiculously overpriced and don't double the power when the load is halved, which can be good or bad depending on the situation. In any case, I really like the power/size ratio of the 250/1.

That is...unless you count the e-series! The new e1400D is unregulated (i think) so it'll drop 533 (according to JL) at 2 ohms. (naughty) Ther rest of their e-series stuff is similar...great SQ as is expected, too!

It seems to be a bit under powered for his applications at only 220 rms.

I never used the DX although it must be hella old. It may be worth avioding as it could be a refurb.

The protege alternator can definitly get to over 14.4 volts, the battery is like any other car battery though with resting voltage at 12.6 volts.

Thats becuase they give you the same power at any impedance. Your looking at it backwards. They already put out the "double" power without needing to drop the impedance.

They are pricey however compare it to a similiar quality amp (JBL and friends aren't even close). The alpine MRD-M500 for example. They are about the same price but the alpine must see a 2 ohm load to give you the same 500 watts rms that the JL can from 1.5-4 ohms. Also JL's do actualy crank out alot more power then they advertise and they increase power with lower impedences. The 500/1 will give you about 650 watts rms at 4 ohms and will deliver over 700 watts rms at 2 ohms.

For power-to-size, you may want to check out the alpine MRP-M350 and even the JL 500/1 as it is only a few inches longer then the 250/1 but pumps out twice the power.

my altenator must suck ass due to abuse haha

well if it gets 14.4 then its 270rms and its true power you know and a 0.05 distortion

the awesome thing about these amps is they gaureentee the power they give a certificate that says what they tested it at. car audio did a article, i havent found any bad yet but there not alot out on them yet. so for the money its pretty good

The birth cirtificate is nothing new. Rockford, alpine, kicker, ect. all have done it for a while now. For the price they seem on par with there compeditors.
