Help Me Decide: CX-5 vs. CR-V

Re: gauges. Sure the Audi might be really cool, but as M pointed out only the luxury brands are really pushing the envelope here. I don't expect an Audi dash (currently only available on the starts at $43K Audi TT) on my car that starts at $25K.
I would like more info in the dash...I did have an info screen on my 06 Saab and it had more info (including an alarm) them my 16 Mazda has, but I really like the white analog gauges built in to my car. I think it actually looks kind of lux. They look better then Jeeps analog dials by a bunch. Mazda easily could have done what Jeep did: analog dials with a lot of information available in the info screen, including mph. But I sincerely doubt very few people bought a Jeep, or a CR-V because of the dash. I know I'm wrong though. Mango is an automotive expert.

Having had the hud for awhile,wouldn't have another car without it.

Everyone has their preferences. Just because one person's preferences does not agree with another does not make either person right or wrong.

When I was looking for a new vehicle, I wanted a car with cargo space that put a smile on my face that followed the KISS principle. And before I am called a Ludite, I enjoy my gadgets but I think there is a time and place for them.

1. I wanted an I4 after dealing with the headaches associated with some repair work, especially changing plugs and ignition coils on my V6. Gas mileage was not a factor since anything smaller would be better than the V6.
2. NA over turbo, again, keeping it simple. One less mechanical item that can wear down. If Mazda offered a turbo, I would not have gotten it and would have been content with the lower power.
3. Tried and true transmission, since manual was not available, the automatic 6 speed was my choice.
4. I like a dark cockpit at night. I prefer minimal distractions while I drive, especially at night so the lack of lighted switches is a positive.
5. Analog dash has just enough info that I want when driving (although a temp gauge would be nice). Anything else is just a distraction.

Are my choices the right for everyone? No.

Is my vehicle right for everyone? No

Is my car right for ME? Yes, yes it is.

As we are reminded of quite a bit, there is a vehicle that gives those bells and whistles. If someone wants those, there is that other vehicle for them.

The only right answer is what car is right for the individual needs and desires of that specific buyer.

When I see "my car is better because...." it fails to take into account the individual and what is the best for an individuals wants or needs. Regardless what car manufacturers, reviewers and advertisements say, there is no one best vehicle for the masses.

Says the guy who supposedly has me on his 'ignore list'. And YES, a HUD is available on the 2017 CRV, along with panoramic sunroof, push-button transmission and a few other things. Do your research before you post.

Ignoring doesn't ignore people who quote you unfortunately so I was lucky to see your FUD :)

So you're saying that you could have chosen HUD when you bought your CR-V? That's funny, I don't see if on Honda USA website. Care to point me to the option you could have chosen for your CR-V?

Just one question...how in the world is the 6A in the CX5 "tried and true"? That thing worries the hell out of me. It's all new engineering, and the failure rate on this forum is NOT comforting.

I look at it like this: I traded in a 2006 Saab 9-3. That was an IIHS top safety pick.... 11 years ago. Technology has advanced so far, that a 1 start difference between one cars frontal offset and another's is still much safer then a car from even 10 years ago. My pregnant wife drove that '06 Saab.
Cars keep getting safer, but the bar keeps getting raised, as well.

I am very confident that my family is damn safe in my CX-5.

That sounds well and good and all, but let me ask...

...picture your wife and kid about to get in a wreck. They are 0.2 seconds from impact, and NOTHING is possible to avoid it. You have an option...would you put them in the 4-star car, or the 5-star car? That's your superpower, right then and there, and that's it. You can place them in either vehicle via magic...which one will you put them in?
 
Realistically, I chose to put them in the vehicle with collision warning and autonomous braking. If both cars have that, I care more about braking performance than 4-star vs. 5-star ratings.

What is the difference between 4 stars and 5 stars? What do those numbers mean in terms of actual injury risk?
Why do NHTSA's ratings change from model year to model year for the same car when the rating system hasn't changed and the car was only tested once, in the year it was released, and not retested in subsequent model years?
Why do different cars get different overall ratings even though their constituent ratings (front, side, rollover) are exactly the same?

If I car I'm interested in has a 1-star or 2-star rating in one of the impact tests, I'll take notice and probably research that. Otherwise, I don't find NHTSA's ratings to be particularly useful.
 
As I say to my 6 year old sometimes: Is it dumb question day? Come on. That doesn't change my point an iota. Even the cheapest shitiest car for sale today (except maybe those Smart cars) are safer then cars built just 10 years ago. When you keep raising the bar, which they should do, of course...hell there wasn't even a frontal offset crash test just a few years ago...

True story.
Saw a car this morning from a distance coming at me. Thought it was a RAV4. Thought to myself "ok that's pretty ugly....I'd get a CR-V over that." It gets closer....oh...it's a CR-V. LOL

It's not an option in the states, but it is available in other countries. But the real question is what information will a HUD provide me that my digital tach cannot? Exactly. As I've said before, it's a redundant feature and if it were available it's not something I would want to pay extra for. Its not as important as something like, lets say CarPlay/AA. Iv'e yet to hear any CRV owners, YouTube reviewers, and auto publications complain about the lack of a HUD in the CRV. On the other hand, Iv'e seen MANY people here, auto online publications and YouTube reviewers all complain about the lack of CarPlay/AA.

CRV isn't going to lose sales to a competitor due to the lack of a HUD. CX-5 on the other hand could lose some sales due to a lack of CarPlay/AA. We've even seen that in a couple of posts from people here stating this a sticking point for some potential buyers.

Disagree. A HUD will absolutely earn some sales based on it alone.

Agreed. Mazda should do some home work quickly to make 2018 CX-5 getting all 5-star NHTSA safety ratings other than rollover like 2015 CX-5.
 
And that's cool. But I guarantee there will be people that see that HUD in a car...in the only car in that price range...and they are going to buy it for that reason. In the US.
Let's not even discuss the Japanese models of these cars. The CX-5 with those intelligent lights. Man. That is the coolest thing I've ever seen in a car. Ever.

They need to do a lot of homework. A diesel and a Grand Select package isn't gonna cut it, or do jack squat for sales or the brand name...
