Help issues with MAF Relocation.

replaced the filter yesterday with a K&N still getting the erratic idle, im also have an exhaust leak coming from the exhaust manifold gasket.. and from the dumptube to the midpipe which both need to be fixed..

so... any update?

Nah. I have been in NJ for a while handling a family emergency. I am back in VA now. I will get back on this and see what I can figure out. Thanks for seeing how the fix was going. I will keep you posted throughout the week.

have you done a smoke test yet? my blitz bov had a leak one time. would have been next to impossible to have caught it by visual inspection or by spraying carb cleaner. not saying your bov has a leak, in fact if it did have a leak it shouldn't affect the idle being it's before the maf now, no? a quick easy thing to check are your injector o-rings, make sure they're not cracked.

when you relocated your maf are both pipes you used the same size in diameter? not sure how the 1.8 and 2.0 mafs are different from the 1.6 but a larger diameter pipe (ie. look at the 1.6 cai problems) has a drastic affect on the maf.

The CAI piping is I belive about 1/2" bigger than the IC piping for the relocation. You would need two reducers with the bigger end on the MAF and the smaller end attaching to the IC piping. with good t-connector clamps to seal everything off.

I'm confused, lol. is the maf measuring the same amount of air in terms of pipe diameter when it's on the cold side vs. hot side? I don't know how the 1.8/2.0 maf works but the 1.6 guys have had tons of problems with cai. maybe the same principles are happening here. the 1.6 maf was calibrated for a pipe that has a stock diameter of 2.25" while most cai are 2.5". so when you'd put the maf on a larger diameter pipe it would not meter all air, thus causing lean condition (P0171). any possibility this is happening? have you tried the 440cc injectors you have?

Hate to bump an older thread but I'm curious to see if you solved anything. I ran into the same problems last weekend (P0171) but Monday the CEL went off but I still have lean idle conditions. I was told by a Mazda tech that I should get a new O2 sensor (which I did) but I'm curious, as you said you did this, if this solved the problem. I can't imagine I have any leaks (idle is a perfect 20 mm Hg) and I've visually checked over everything many times. I've swapped MAFs to no avail and now I'm curious if I've just wasted $110.

calibration with other piping is not the issue.. you can put the bigger pipe on each side of a maf.. either way.. the MAF itlself is 2.75" and is calibrated wfor his OWN size.. even if you put 3" piping on each sides, the MAF will read whats goes on inside itself.. so the air flowing in a 3" pipe will accelerate to a higher speed and pass through the MAF which is smaller, and then go back to original speed.

Well the O2 sensor I replaced it with was apparently the wrong O2 sensor. So after getting a hold of the proper O2 sensor my lean issue seemed to be resolved......Honestly I am not too sure though cause from time to time i would still get this irratic idle. I have reason to believe that the diaphram in my greddy type s is shot. But I will let you know when I get my car back from AllAspect ( lol long story short, I am from NY, I drive through rain, apparently I was driving like I thought my car could swim or something when we had a crazy rainstorm at the end of june, oops)

And I hear you on the checking for leaks....i literally went over my engine every other day for about a month.(boom06) Then I met up with mryellerp5 and he did me a favor and went over it to see if somehow there was anything I missed, but he couldnt find anything either.

Wow, you're from in Hampton Roads too!? I'm from that area but I go to schoo, at VT so I'm up here most of the year - you should come to some of the meets we have. I actually might have solved part of my problem. Since today was the first in a week it hasn't rained up here I got under the car and looked around. Sure enough, I'm missing an entire stud from my s-pipe and there's a sizeable exhaust leak I can feel when the car is on. I'm going to replace that stud and tighten everything up and see what that does. The weird thing it - this is after the primary O2 sensor and before my WB so while it makes sense that it's screwing with my WB, I don't know why it's messed with my idle. I ordered a new primary O2 sensor anyway so hopefully between these two things everything will be straightened out.

after seeing what the 2.0 maf looks like I see how it works. the 1.6 maf (which the mazda3 and 6 use) sits on a pipe via a flange.

well if witchdoktor is saying the car goes lean cuz of the CAI i should recommend to all and myself to get fuel pressure regulator.. to give some more fuel so that way the car will stop getting air issues.. btw if you do this get the air/fuel pressure gauge

good idea? thx!

*i have some lost power with my CAI between 2k and 3.5k (maybe 4k.. i have no tach)

I am good now. I do hope everyone else is. I still get a weird idle from time to time. but I am alright. anyone else care to chime in on their situations?

Well I have also had problems which I think may be linked either to my mafs or my egr. I threw the P0171 awhile back. My car was almost stuttering/mildly misfiring at certain rpms. It started with a kinda hesitation. Felt like the car was being held back and then it would go. I found out my egr valve was getting stuck open and that was causing my car to lean out badly. I replaced the egr valve and it went away for awhile. Its been almost a year now and my car is kinda doing it again. I have neard talk about replacing our mafs with a blow by type. Anybody know if this is possible and where I would get one from?

I am considering cleaning the mafs maybe it is coated a bit with oil from my K&N filter. I put a little oil on it. I am also wanting to replace my primary O2 sensor, swapping in some wrx 440cc injectors and running a spilt second AFC.

Does this sound like overkill? I am wanting to run a little more boost and get a tune. So the injectors and afc will be needed anyways.
