Mazda Protege ES 2001
I ended up with a 2.0 '01 ES protege. I lowered it and put on 17" wheels. I'm in the process of gathering funds to put on a new mp3 front bumper (maybe a kit).

Can I do anything to the engine (I know it's an auto) I want to get alittle more out of it. I read that AEM makes a 2.0 short intake.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is their a ECU in the sedans like the mp3/p5?

Same ECu as the P5.

Alot you can do to the enigne, the intake is possible and even the turbo kits can fit.

the ECU is identical to the one in the protege5. Flyin Miata is finishing up their turbo kit for the automatic Protege. The only difference between it and the manual transmission kit is a slight bend in a pipe. You might need an auxilliary trans cooler as well. Any engine / suspension parts that work with the 2.0 engine will work with the p5 and ES.

try these sites;

www.srmotorsports.com/protege.htm - keep in mind that anything clutch or flywheel related will not work with your car
www.fmprotege.com - TURBO!
www.spool-turbo.com - TURBO!
www.protege5online.com - has a little bit of everything...

1st mp3 in NH

Hey, 1st mp3 in NH. Installs in progress. Kenny flushed the z6 xovers into the right side of the trunk. 15 farad cap into the left. Has string neon around both. He mounted them on plexi.

For the amp rack, he's overlapping the 1000/1 over the 450/4 where the seats fold down.

He is somehow managing to keep my spare, building the box into the top deck and what little space is between the spare and the back seats. Going to have to be pretty big for the 2 12w6v2's.

Just talked to alpine and the pxah700 is delayed again, east coast manager said expect 7/4.

Turbo

Might have to save up for this. A couple quick questions.

If I'm going with the turbo. What else do I need and who would install this? Any mazda performance dealers in New England?

yea i know i always listen to those someguyz just like the voices in my head. who would ignore them. lol. Get nitrous. heard the NX kit is pretty good. Nice instant 50 hp to the wheels.

flying protege

Is this turbo similar to the one in the mp3? I'm pretty new at the performance stuff (because I've always had automatic's, dumb)

What would go along with the turbo: exhaust, sway bars, intake.

Thanks for all the help.

There is no stock tubo in the MP3 and it is a much larger turbo then the MSP.

An exhuast of atleast 2.25" is good if you aren't going to rip out the cats.
A clutch and flywheel are al but MUST haves.

I saw the flying mazda page, $5K for a turbo, how much HP does that give you?

Umm, $5000 is for one of our top-end Miata kits. For the Protege, it's $3595. We've measured that at 191 ft/lbs, 167 hp on our dyno.

In order to offer the automatic kit, we need to get our hands on an automatic car....
