Help a newb! Bent Rod / Spun bearing

Hey guys I think I "might" (prob not) have spun a bearing or bent a rod. Im pretty sure the car is fine but the suspense is driving me crazy. I just cant drive the car with the thought in the back of my mind. Im not sure if there is any way to check the bearings without opening the block . . .

Anyway from what ive been told dropping the oil pan and checking the rods is a 30 minute job. Since I dont have the time im most likely going to take it to a decent shop and have them do it. Just wondering what I should look for. Ive never seen a rod or anything inside an engine before. Will a bend be obvious?

I think im just overreacting but if you read my other posts I heard a weird noise for the 2nd time about a 1.5 weeks ago. Sounded very very bad. Very brief but it sounded like a metal hanger was shaking around in the engine bay. Sound lasted only 1 second but I also let off very quickly. Hopefully its nothing serious because I baby my car during DD. Once a week or so Ill give it some WOT pulls. Ive got basic bolt ons and the 1st time I heard the noise was without my TMIC. Car seems to drive / sound fine.

Thanks for the help !

Sounds like your car is running lean at some point and that is causing your engine to knock....

If you had spun a bearing or bent a rod it would make noise all the time not once in a while. my.02

thanks slo. Im feeling better. Saw a few youtube videos and if you have a bent rod it will click click click click.

I guess that noise was sputtering. Don't think it was knock because I have a warning light when my knock goes over 1.

I mean absolutly no offense in saying this and I do not mean to be condescending, but this is has just been bothering me for quite some time how undereducated some people are about modification and tuning of their vehicles when it comes to this car. Believe it or not, I have never once heard anything like this stuff in the SRT4 community (or any other community I was a part of) and everyone [with a few exceptions] that owns and adores their SRT4 is a dou*** bag.

I have never once, added bolt ons, done serious motor work, upgraded turbo/superchargers on a vehicle of mine without MONTHS of extensive research on what the car can or cannot take. (I am on my 7th month with this car)

Now to keep this positive, there are quite a few general information BOOKS out there that would be more than helpful for 90% of the "newbie" questions. Here are some links to some excellent beginner literature that I had purchased myself within the past 5 years since I first started getting into cars, modding, tuning, etc. (And in my mind, they have done wonders and made me a VERY cautious and patient, but successful enthusiast)

In my mind, THE turbocharging book

It also is not out of the question or a goofy thing to subscribe to some kind of serious tuner magazine, nothing focused on the chicks bent over the hood (though that is NEVER a bad thing) but one that actually takes the time to do in depth walkthroughs, etc. etc.

I hope I have not crossed any lines as I am just trying to be helpful and I also hope I didn't disobey any forum rules so that this post gets trashed. Thanks everyone and have a great day...

i have a set of new stock rods, rings and pistons laying about - yes NEW - if you need something to help get your car back on the road.

If you're looking for reading material, may I also suggest Maximum Boost by Corky Bell...very informative and can be applied in a variety of ways to a great number of cars.

i remember your post a while back, and think i may have been the one that warned you about a bent rod. since you were able to drive without hearing the noise again, thats not the issue.

have you changed your oil recently? make sure theres not any metal shavings in there and you should be fine on the spun bearing front.

+1 i'm reading this now, but i thought we came to the conclusion you were ok.

That's awesome. I spent a week reading it while on vacation and I really like his approach to things, he makes it easy to understand and gets his points across without going too deep in the technical nonsense.

i bought the same book like 5 years ago and read it before crossing over to the turbocharged scene i love it as they explain turbo theory. another book i recommend is ecu tuning by ben strader both helped me tons.

the other book i have to read is "how to tune and modify engine manement systems" by jeff hartman

Thanks for all your help guys. My car is fine :). Ive been watching my knock and from everywhere ive seen a bent rod has a very audible noise which I don't have. I guess that noise was just sputtering or hesitation. Car feels 100% normal.

As for the reading lol all my time in books goes to biochemistry and microbiology. I have a book on turbocharging hondas / nissans. The problem I have found with my limited experience is that each platform is different. A turbo is a turbo but on different cars I often get confused.

Once again thx for your help and if I happen to need a new Rod you will get a call ken !!
