Well I am posting for my husband again (he has duty again tonight duty days suck). We have an MSP5. It has been boosted for about 20,000 miles and we are having some problems. CEL p0171 system 1 bank 1 too lean I did some reaserch for him and couldnt find anything that we havent done. This started when we put the check valve in after reading if you boosted a NA protege. He took it out to see what would happen and a week later it came back so he put the check valve back in and of course it still came back. Here is a list of what has been replaced

Replaced WGA (2 weeks ago)
Purge Solenoid Valve (replaced tonight)
MAF sensor and recently cleaned (about 4 - 5 months ago)
EGR Valve (same time as MAF)
Intake Manifold Gasket (same time as MAF)
Spark Plugs (2 days ago gapped at .030)
Plug Wires (same time as plugs)
Both O2 sensors (second one has non fouler)

Car vacuums at -20 to -22 it boost fine and holds great. Runs rich still under boost AFR's are normal. I really want him to figure it out or get help from you guys because he is talkin about selling it since its paid off. I dont want him to get rid of the car becasue its just as much mine as it is his (always out there helpin him out) So please help

thank you,
Ashley (tia)

From what I know its usually the MAF needs cleaned, or your 02 sensors.

But i heard from reading around that it could be from a vac leak?? also. But that code could have many things behind it, its weird like that haha.

Replace your coil packs and check for boost leaks. The charge pipe at the bottom of the intercooler sucks..it always comes loose.

Anyways..I fixed my code with 2 new coil packs. Everything runs good now.

Thats what Funky did to fix it.

exhaust leak by the manifold, or vac/boost leak somewhere in the system? and what kind of o2 sensor did you use?

like everyone else said that could be a wide range of things. coilpacks, bad plug wire, bad fuel injector, bad fuel pump, bad fpr, plus all the other things you wrote. i got that code for a bad primary o2. i replaced my o2 and the store gave me a bad one. you could try another one but im one that hates throwing money at a car and praying so i ended up taking mine to the dealer and they tested it and said it was o2. dealer has a nifty computer that tells you all kinds of stuff.

I just got of the phone with him. He said he is going to try and switch around the fuel injectors and see what happens. Maybe one is weak. Also he did seafoam the engine and no smoke came out anywhere except the exhaust. How would you tell if you the exhaust mani is cracked? there are no hairline fractures on it.

JDM we got the O2 sensors that plug right up to the stock wires.

The Dealership said they wouldnt work on the car because its not stock anymore. We will take it back and see if they will anyway.

I will tell him about the coilpacks next time we talk we have already spent about 400 trying to figure this out. Its getting kinda of outta hand thats why he is getting frustrated.

You guys are so helpful thank you for everything.

i may not be a LOT of help, but i'm closer than a lot of these guys.. i could prolly give you a hand checking things out..
