Hello! and wheel fitment?

Hey everybody, I'm new! I don't have a PR5, but I think one would be a fantastic replacement for my S13 that's very much on it's way out. They seem to have a great combination of style and practicality.

Now, coming from the 240SX crowd, I place a good amount of stock in flush wheel fitment, something many of you (at least from the official wheel thread) don't seem to be too concerned about. Are you out there, my flush brethren?

I'm curious about the dimensions of the wheel wells. As in, how much inner spacing is there before the wheel hits the suspension? Would a, say, 17x8.5 +50 fit? From the wheel thread it appears that would fit on the outer side with a good healthy roll. I'm afraid I'd be unsatisfied with anything less than a 8" width.

I don't think anything like that would fit without a spacer. The tires would be pretty close to the spring perch on the strut as well.....

Scroll down the above link a bit. The rims in that post are FD RX-7 wheels. They are 16x8 +50 offset and require a 5mm spacer I think, to just clear the strut itself.

I run a 215/40/17 on stock mazdaspeed protege wheels and rub when the wheel is fully turned like when doing a U-turn. That is with a considerable drop. Assuming you are going to lower the car, you will rub like crazy if you go much more than 7-7.5 in. wide or so. Be it on the fender or the wheel well. If I have a full car of 5 people, I rub on the rear wheel well area if I hit a bump as well. I'm sure that can be corrected with a stiffer spring/better strut, but I never have that many people in the car really.

Hope that helps you a bit. I'm sure someone who has ran wider will chime in soon.

To run wheels like that with a tyre that isnt a rubber band, I'm almost certain you'd need to be running coilovers.

Why would whether it's just on spring/struts or on coilovers affect the tires that could be used? I would plan on a 215/40 or so with those wheels.

The tyres can hit/rub on the bottom of the spring perch on regular struts/springs for one... I have 215/40 tyres on a 17x7.5 +48 offset and have only a little bit of room left. I could run a 215/45 and be very close and I'm on conventional style (but lowered) springs and struts. Its the rear struts that are the bigger hurdle.

This is a 225/45-16 tyre on 16x8 +50 RX7 wheels with a (custom made, but still) coilover setup. Notice where the spring perch used to be at the bottom of the coilover threads. You'd be hitting even if the wheel would fit.

Ah yes, I remember now, thanks. Well an online calculator says that even with 225/40 tires on the 8.5 +50 the setup is 5mm closer to the suspension. Do you not even have that much room?

Haha, nice edit. I'd rather not resort to coilovers on this one, want to keep some of the practicality. A picture like that with a spring/strut combo and any known spec wheel/tire combo would be fantastic as a visual aid for me, combined with these online calculators.

Thanks, I've seen that guide. Rubbing on the chassis and fender liner can be fixed with a hammer and good scissors/shears lol. The calculators I'm using don't tell me if it will fit or not, they just tell me the position of the wheel+tire relative to another. http://www.wheelsmaster.com/rt_specs.jsp This one, which is nice because it takes the tire size into account, tells me that the x8.5 +50 with a 225/40 has the exact same inner clearance as the FD x8 +50 225/45. Though the 8.5 wheel itself has less clearance, both wheels having a 225 tire actually gives them virtually the same overall clearance.

heres my set up
Rota D2 18x8 +48 205/40/18
BC coilovers
Fender roll
plan to add 10mm spacer to the front

as far for some specs on other set up i heard and seen 17x8 +35 205/40/17 or 17x8.5 +30
but dont forget to search the forums for answers
Welcome to the Best Mazda Fourms by the way!
