Hella Supertones

I'm tired of the girly little horn on my P5. I'm thinking of upgrading to Hella Supertones, and I'm wondering how difficult it is to wire them up, as from what I can tell the factory horn is one piece, not two like the Supertones. Looks like removing the grille might be the hardest part, although I'm not sure as to where the horns will mount either. If anyone with these horns installed could chime in as to how you mounted and wired them I'd appreciate it. Want to order these soon to get them in before it gets too cold to work on the P5.

From what i recall, the Supertones do not come with the wiring needed

BUT, i think there is a "How to" on installing them if not on here, on another mazda forum

PM Flash5. I know he has them on his car and I'm not 100% sure on how he mounted them or wired them. Lots of other members have done it as well though. I have the Nautilus Air Horn and while it's not as loud as the Hella's it's 10x better than the stocker.

As for grill removal, it is very easy. Remove the two screws on the ends of the grill/take a slotted screwdriver to remove the two plastic fasteners found in the center of the grill (they will be facing the engine bay)/next pull up on the grill while pulling the bottom away from the car.

Don't be afraid to pull hard. It is going to seem like you are going to break something but you won't.

Hella Horns are the s****...got mine on earlier in the year and they are AWESOME...

Very easy to wire...I am sure the link shows you that, not to mention there are two holes right there to bolt them to...

Here is a pic on mine...

I am going to do Kansei's wiring, but I can't figure out one thing... What wire do you use from the stock horn harness to get the horn to activate? That didn't seem clear in his instructions. My kit should arrive tomorrow so I'll be picking up the hardware and wiring tonight or tomorrow depending on what my schedule looks like.

IIRC, there is one of the wires that you can tell is grounded out...one power, one ground...maybe not though...it has been a while since I looked at it...

I just remembered that I have the full P5 wiring diagram somewhere, so, I can probably figure it out from there. If I get the wrong one I'll just try the other one. Did anyone else install a fuse in-line with the + wire you're running from the battery and/or fuse box? I'm thinking that putting a 30A fuse about 10-12 inches from the battery/fuse box in-line would be a good idea, like when wiring an amp.

I don't have a fuse...my grill is off as well getting painted, so I will take another look at it for you when I head out later...

Thanks man. I'm probably going to just wire it up as Kensai did. Can't wait to actually have a decent horn.

lol...you are welcome. And I didn't know you used Chris' how-to.

Could someone please pm me the link too? Need to upgrade my horn, and those Hellas mounted under the arched "eyebrows" of my 2000 ES grill not only fit the bill, but will also give the car a much meaner look.

I just did up all my wiring... I had the harness from my Fet Catz SRs, I crimped on connectors and gonna see if it works. All the lengths are just about right, trimmed down some of the wires, and it's pretty slick... I do have extra connectors and a bunch of wire in case it doesn't work. Not sure if the relay is powerful enough,

Alright ladies... I installed the Supertones tonight... They were pretty damn easy to put in, I already had the wiring harness fabbed up, so it was a matter of putting everything in the right place, running the wires, and then getting them bolted down. Wow. What an intense sound, the youtube videos don't do them justice. Here's a crappy video from my BlackBerry... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhpPYoqalRw

I'm wondering if the fog relay I used is really beefy enough, I don't know if it's 30A or just 15A. Doesn't say anywhere in the install directions I got with the Catz SRs. I have a bunch of full size relays around, going to see if I can get better results with them. I like the tone of the horn, not sure if the full volume potential is being realized though.
