Ok i just finished messing with it. I moved the dials and watched the the white wheel move. The cables are fine and i took the car for a drive and it actually gave a little warm heat so i know the thermostat was the issue but its just not getting hot like it used to do. But im gonna mess with it tomorrow its to cold out now.

Too bad, that was the easy fix.

Before replacing the core, which sounds like a PITA, it would be best to verify that it is indeed the problem. Look in the service manual to find where the hoses/pipes for the heater core go in and out. If possible unhook them and try to blow water through it. If water does go through it easily fill it with very hot water and using the accessory position on the ignition switch (for obvious reasons, do NOT turn over the motor!) turn on the fan, to see if you get any heat out.

I have never had a heater core go out on any of my cars. I have had the pipe connecting one to the coolant system corrode and develop pinholes, but the symptom there was a gurgling noise and coolant all over the driveway.

Rev the car does it blow hotter air? If it does then you need to either fill the coolant or purge the air out of the coolant system.

driving it will accomplish much more than revving. its cold enough here sometimes that if I'm running my heater full blast, my car would never reach operating temp without putting a load on the engine.

+1. It's been 0 to -10 degrees here the last two weeks. Yesterday I had to drive my car for almost 15 minutes before it reached operating temperature. This with a new water pump, coolant, thermostat, and temperature sensor.

Come to Canada and try driving your car for a full hour before you get ANY kind of heat lol.. I'd LOVE -10*F here in the winter!

If it is that cold maybe you should consider blocking all or part of the grill. The hypermilers do that for aero reasons, but in such cold climates, it may be worth doing just to let the motor reach operating temperature. If it starts to overheat you could always blast the heater and open a window...

That's -10 without the windchill. With the wind, it can get to 20 to 30 below zero (altho I'm sure Canada is still worse) :)

I have a few extra OEM block heaters lying around if anyone wants to make me an offer. I have my grill about 90% blocked off (actually right in front of the radiator) with some plexiglass. The car kept overheating so i had an extra Mazdaspeed high pressure rad cap lying around, so I threw that on and works great now. REALLY hot heater! :D
