Head Issues

:
2003 Protege 5
Reved my 03 P5 quite high to get in front of a car when merging. It stalled out about a block later (At Part Source, ironic). When I restarted it, a tickety-tick noise was coming from the engine (Head Area). Checked it out. Got pissed off with it. Went into the store to make my purchases. Came out and the noise was gone. Went home and watched a movie. Went back out to the car and drove maybe 2 miles and the noise started again. It stalled on me again. And the RPM's were fluctuating at a stand still.

Any Ideas on what it could be?

doesn't sound good:( i'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in on what it could be specifically. i'll have a spare head available in spring if that's what it is, and i'm in the edmonton area:)

The high revs alone shouldn't be the cause of any problems. The rev limiter kicks in just above 7300 to keep from damaging anything. It sounds like it could be an intake screw though. Most Mazda dealers should be familiar with that problem and be able to confirm it pretty quickly.

it is the manifold!

my manifold just went bad and did the same thing, unfortunately for me the butterfly valves all got sucked into the motor and caused some damage, now I need to replace the engine cause one of the main bearings spun out on me
