hat1018's build thread

And you're really not too far from Larry, all things considered. I have access to a fender roller, and it's right around the corner if we ever need it.

Larry, any idea on what you're going to do with the stock exhaust manifold and cat when you get a header? I've been meaning to buy one, and there are a few for sale threads on the site now, but I'd like to try and get it locally to avoid shipping fees since it'd be a pretty heavy box. lol

I would most likely pass them on to some needy soul. After I decide whether or not the new set up will be annoying or not of course. Wait, you have a header right?

Yea, I have Evan's old header. The car also came with a Mental Addiction midpipe, and Magnaflow cat-back with resonator. I'd like to have some sort of exhaust still, just not so loud. It's getting annoying to me and Steph, which means it's probably too loud for an infant. lol

Have you thought about adding a resonator? I am no exhaust expert by any means but it might be enough to quiet it down for you. I would give that a shot. Or we could try a swap, my stock manifold and cat for your header and mid pipe. I would think they would both give decent sound and not be too loud. It might be a good idea to try it out and decide from there. It would be a lot of work though.

There's already a resonator in the system.

I'll probably try and score a set off one of these guys selling them, if I can get them cheap enough. If not, we can explore our options. Still unsure if I want to hang onto the stuff for future use or just sell it and put the money elsewhere.

Putting the stock header will make a huge difference. I'd say that's the way to go.

Yep, mine got louder and had more "bark" to it when I installed it. I still had everything else stock at that point, too. I think it's a lot more the case with the P5's as there's the cat in the manifold afaik. I know the 96+ 626's are like that. I still have my factory mani with no cat if someone is interested. You'd need a downpipe and stuff, so I'm not sure how viable that option is.

Josh if you want to buy one of the other stock manifolds, I might be willing to buy your header and test pipe.

I'd really like to try and find one locally. The first response I got back was an outrageous shipping quote because they're "so heavy", aka - likely a ploy to deter the sale because they didn't want to deal with shipping them.

We might be able to work out a swap + cash, but I don't know if you wanted to hang onto your stock stuff just in case the setup was too loud for you. I know times are tight for you right now as well.

^ interesting

As far as a header goes, I want one but I am just afraid it is going to be too loud/raspy. I'd like to know what stock exhaust sounds like with a header.

My full exhaust is only raspy above 5K, and the car rarely sees those RPM's, as I'm sure will be the case with your P5. And even then, it's completely tolerable IMO.

And wouldn't a header on a stock exhaust be kind of counter productive? Increasing the flow out of the head, only to bottle neck it down through a factory exhaust? I always went back to front...cat-back, high flow (or gutted since it's cheaper :) ) cat, then header.

Actually once the cat is gone the only things that are restrictive is the rest of the system. haha! I really am not too worried about power gains, I just want a little bit of purr to the exhaust note.
