has your car ever been broken into WITH an alarm?

no but i thought that originally protege's came with an alarm cause it beeped when you lock it........apparently not, all my stuff got stolen!! it sucked so i got the top of the line viper alarm. did yours get broken into?

No, I got a 2-way compustar and a $3000 audio setup and was told of people that are jealous of my stuff. I'm looking to make it as fool proof as possible.

I've read up on lots of things but want some firsthand experiences...

There is NO SUCH THING as a "foolproof" alarm. The best thing an alarm can do, and the only thing you should expect it to, is a fuel cutoff so your whole car doesn't get taken. It will not protect car audio.

The more agressivly you install it to prevent theft, the more damage they will cause when they do take it. For examle: my deck was screwed in last time, they just ripped my whole dash open with a prybar instead.

2-Way is great, but you can't tell me your always within range of it, or that it will work in an old stone building, or that you'll even hear the 4 beeps.

People don't pay attention to car alarms anymore.

Do yourself a favor and keep the faceplate of your deck off and out of the car, and don't flaunt what you have. Park in high traffic areas, where many people would pass, or atleast somone would pass every 10 minutes. Th alarm is a deternt.... the more juvenille theifs will think twice. Pros won't bat an eyelash; slim jim door, pull open, pop hood, gra siren, rip it off car, drop hood, remove deck, pop trunk, clean it out, gone <10 minutes.

Yes, two times actually.

Once at a stripclub for my friends bachelor party. I come out and hit the button on the fob and nothing. So, I open my door, no alarm, no lights, nothing. Pop the hood and the battery cable was disconnected!! They didnt get into the car that time, but my lock was all screwed up from a screwdriver. After that I put a pin on the hood and a mercury switch on the trunk.

Next outside my house. I walked out on New Year's Day to find footprints in the snow to and from my car. Window smashed, radio and cd's gone, subs and s*** still in the trunk. Never heard the alarm :(

Car got broken into twice.

First time car was parked I had everything in the trunk (previously was parked in a parking garage), and the trunk release lever was locked. I miss that nice feature from my Civic. They broke the window and the only thing they got was my radar detector.

Second time the car was parked outside my house, they used a slim jim on the door and stole the CD player, my fault for not taking the face plate off. They lifted up the carpet and tugged on the trunk cable, but I had an autocross that day, so there was NOTHING in the trunk.

I then installed an alarm, and nothing ever happened to that car again.

Either way, take the advice of those in this thread. Park it in "smart" locations and don't flaunt what you have, or just don't have all that unnecessary crap in your car.

Broken into once with the alarm on. I know it was a pro who did it since I parked in my complex which had just stopped being a retirement only community so all my neighbors were over 55 and I never played it loud near my home. Also I know how well everything was bolted in and how well the alarm was done since at the time it was my profession. The got all three of my amps, but nothing else and did very minimal damage. Just went for what they could get quickly. The sub box was in so tight that it was almost a strut brace and the radio was bolted in to the main structure of the dash. The amps on the other hand were mounted beetween the sub box and the back seat in a show panel with floating caps mounted next to each of them so they got those. Second time my exhaust was stolen while parked in the underground, gated parking of a different apartment complex I lived in later. Never heard the alarm through three flights of concrete, but I sure noticed it when I remote started the car the next morning and the was no muffler on there. Damn that was loud.(boom01)

my muffler was stolen off my cavalier while parked on a main road in Seaside in the summer, right in the middle of the day... that was a surprise when I started my car (boom07)

damn, you'd figure with all the cops they have in seaside that wouldn't happen. hoodpins would help keep the alarm going i guess, something i may want to consider myself. but i really wish the state would let me install flamethrowers. that's just a bs law that we can't have those.

or an electric shock force field system...

If someone really wants your car badly enough it will get stolen no matter what alarm you got. But for the everyday thief, if you have a good pager alarm with backup battery, interior motion sensor, tilt sensor, and glass sensor, you should be good enough for a warning. Then it's left up to you to call the police and then try and delay the thiefs untill the popo get there.

I had a Jetta that was broken into one night (factory alarm). Had it parked outside a school gym 60ft from the doors under a lamppost with younger children jumping rope and playing tag outsdie the gym doors. Bastards took my HU and 30 cds, not to mention broken glass all over the place. My wife who was 8 months pregnant sat on the curb and cried. That morning a garbage truck swiped the rear bumper coming out of an alley near our old apt. Luckily my neighbor was warming up his car and got all the info....$350 dollars worth of damage! Kicker is....we had just bought the car new 3 weeks before this happened.:(

A friend of mine had the viper alarm, all the speakers, HU, and CDs stolen from his camaro right outside his bedroom window. At least they nicely unplugged everything instead of just cutting the harnesses. The only time his alarm ever went off was when I'd drive by his house in my miata and rev.

I never put alarms on anything. Just a waste of money and an annoyance to your neighbors.

No matter what, if they want your car, they'll get your car and what ever is in the car.

A cousin got his Civic stolen right out of his garage during daylight, morning time. No one saw a thing. They went under his bumper, unscrewed it, clipped the alarm line, then towed the car away. They found the car totally stripped including parts along with busted the hood lock.

Another friend's brother got his Integra ripped off parked in a high traffic area with security cams right on his car. Security cams got a good 20 minutes of the guys ripping off the stuff in the car and cutting his steering wheel off. No one did a thing.

best you can do is not flaunt what you have or tell people what you got in your ride because a lot of times, it's people you know who rip you off. Don't go blasting your sounds near your home or just before parking in a lot. Park in high traffic and well lit areas. It doesn't hurt to try to park right in front of security cams and hope your car does not get ripped off. Alarms may stop some, but if the guy wants something, he will get it. Good luck, peace out.
