Map The Fallen is a sombering, but incredibly amazing tribute to those brave men and women who are willing to put their own lives on the line to protect the freedoms that we enjoy.

This project has gathered data on the coalition casualties of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and has mapped that data onto Google Earth. Download the map and open it in Google Earth.

From Map The Fallen:
This Memorial Day I would like to share with you a personal project of mine that uses Google Earth to honor the more than 5,700 American and Coalition servicemen and women that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have created a map for Google Earth that will connect you with each of their stories—you can see photos, learn about how they died, visit memorial websites with comments from friends and families, and explore the places they called home and where they died.

It doesn't matter what your views on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are to understand that those brave soldiers who have paid the ultimate price while defending our country and our way of life deserve our thoughts and prayers on this Memorial Day holiday. Memorial Day weekend may be the unofficial start to summer in many places, especially coastal areas that close down during the colder months. But Memorial Day does not mean heading to the beaches and the boardwalks for the first time of the season. Memorial Day means remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, and Map The Fallen is an albeit somber yet powerful tribute to the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Please take some time examining this incredible map on this Memorial Day, and please discuss how viewing this tribute made you feel on this ever-important day of remembrance.

Also, I thank everyone in advance for not taking this thread off-topic and into a discussion on the politics of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Please be respectful to the fact that Memorial Day is a day to remember the soldiers -- past, present, and future -- who have died or will die while in service to the United States to protect our freedoms.

Technical note: Even if you already have Google Earth installed, you should download the newest version, as certain older versions will crash when opening the map.

wow, that is a great way to pay tribute to all of them though. One of my best friends from school leaves tonight for training to go into Iraq...
