GT28RS vs. IHI VF22 Dyno test

You're right about that. Just wish you can follow the law of natural selection.

Like always, I am just sharing info of tests that I am able to make and bring it here. I am not trying to say that that one turbo is better than other. I am only giving facts.

I got the dynojet setup only 3 weeks ago and we are still learning how to use it properly. The computer we are using is a very used PC and the battery inside the CPU is bad so the date is not valid. Also the AG, RO etc is only for information but does not change any readings.

The runs were not made the same day. Please understand that to fit an IHI into a Garrett flange is not that easy. That is why the run conditions are not exactly the same.

IHI is very difficult to work with and they do not supply much information. Their aftermarket support is very poor and that is why I make these tests. I don't have the maps, only the info we can get thru the internet and mostly on the Subaru WRX.

I don't always go by theory but by real tests and actual performance.

I don't mind all these critizisim, because it is the same in all forums and in the real world. When I made the fastest Acura RSX, it was the same. Now is all calmed down and we keep the first place in their poll as the fastest and quickest RSX so far.

Don't threaten me.Tread lightly, I advice you to follow your own comments.
I have no desire to get into it with anyone. I do expect honest numbers and data from all that post it.One thing that bothers me is when bad info is flashed around.Doing a dyno with different setings isn't accurate..One is done AG(All gear) and the other done RO(Roll on, 1 gear)..It's like comparing different boost levels.
I will make a run today with a RO and AG settings to show you that the WHP is going to the the same.

Nah, nothing like that at all man. I just don't believe that the IHI VF22 is better than my personal turbo of choice. It's how old of a design? 10 years? 15 years? I don't see how it could even match the RS series Garrett.

Add on to that the sketchy date, the questionable differences in temp/humidity and settings... and the fact that you can pretty much make a dyno tell you whatever you want, I just don't see this being right.

Just my .02, take it as you will matty.
I am so glad that people are now looking at the dyno chart with more then just peak numbers in mind. This was my b**** last year when some other vendor made post's with dyno sheets. Now as a forum we are now looking for the right things and not just peak numbers.

I was able to test both the GT28RS and the IHI VF22 turbos on the same car, at the same boost levels and with the same exhaust and engine. 26 more WHP on just the turbo.

I have a customer who was not happy with his upgrade in his VW Golf GTI turbo that came with a GT28RS. I told him to try the IHI VF22 that I use on many cars with 1.8 to 2.4 liter engines.

We fabricated a flange to adapt the IHI to the manifold and made a new flange to fit the downpipe.

The results are what I expected. I had tried the GT28RS on a customers car (MSP) and the difference in power was noticiable being greater in the car with the IHI.

In both dyno runs, the boost would go as much as 14 psi and then dropped to 10 psi. I think that is the way the ECU controls it. If it kept the boost, the difference could have been even larger.

It seems to be a little bit more lag with the IHI but that is because it is a 1.8 liter engine. That is not much an issue with the FS 2.0 in the Proteges.

Here is the dyno sheet.
What about the torque curves? Maybe that would also help to compare the two. Also where is the AFRs? That can also cause one turbo to lose over the other. Why are the curves so choppy? Looks like that had a msall amount of detonation on both runs. Did these cars have some kind of EMS on they or just an FMU. It hard to tell with the choppy curves, my guess is they had an FMU and a clamp.

See Matty, Juan can speak for himself...he doesn't need you ruining his thread.
This is the truth. Although I am unable to contribute a whole lot to the FI forum I do enjoy reading and learning about different options. I read the s/c thread also and thought that it is another great option.

Stuff like this is not necessary and not constructive. Defend your own "honor" all you want but don't just jump in and defend other forum members because you think they are being bullied. This post isnt supposed to be for anyone member. It's a general rule that I follow.

Now I feel like an ass for continuing a threadjack.

Juan, you have to forgive them.....they get REAL defensive if someone says they've got something more effective/cheaper/reliable/etc\

good ups to you Juanio!
I agree totally. It seems like nobody around here appreciates anybody else's work. Think of how hard it must be to get up and "come to work", knowing that 90% of your product target audience equates to 7,000 misers on a message board right there at your fingertips. It's common sense, and goes hand in hand with any economics law, but still I think it's a little much.

I still don't see any reason to have major prejudice towards either manufacturer.

I will say that Juan's lack of presence on the board here allows for some major controversy in the time he's "away".

WEAK!

Trust, everyone who knows Juan appreciates what he does. This is not the issue. The issue is instigation by outside parties.

I think that this forum has grown a lot over the last year. Most people now what to see more the just claims made. If the turbo does make better hp that it may be great for some people. The problem the way I see it is that you only see half the info. What if it sucks at the lowend, very long spool up for one? Also what if the runs were start at the same rpm and gear? Last year we did not look that deep into a dyno chart. Now we are looking at the whole chart to see more then peak numbers.

Keep in mind that for over 5 months now we have been told about a 330whp Protege. Many people have asked many time for a dyno sheet. It has never been posted.
