Group Buy: Hitch mounted rear bumper protectors

Hi folks,

Since I recently installed a trailer hitch on my CX5 I am now unable to get one of those full bumper/push bars. For those that live in urban areas where parking is tight, this might be the best product to use. I also noticed this product also has shock absorbing properties which might come in very handy in a possible rear end collision a (see white paper link on the bottom)

They have applications for both 2" and 1 1/4" receivers.


I e-mailed the owner about any group buy savings and he proposed that if we can get 10 buyers that he will include free shipping and a free locking pin.

I am interested. I will also be using a bike rack with the OEM hitch. In terms of the front bumper guard, what are you using? I had posted a separate thread on this and it's gotten quite a bit of view but not a single reply. Perhaps I wasn't clear on what I was looking for.

I don't have a solution for a front bumper guard other than puttinng those silver/black pushbars in front.

As for the rear bumper guard, I will be ordering mine this weekend. For 2 or more buyers you get a free hitch locking pin, 10+ you get free shipping.

If you have a factory installed hitch receiver you'll have to go with the 1 1/4" receiver.

The guy's "white papers" read more like poorly-thought-out marketing hype than scientific journals. No mention anywhere in the site about CE or UL certification- all the claims seem to be his obviously biased opinions. The things there may work, but independent verification would be nice.

Trust me folks, its only because I live in NYC that this is needed. And, because I have a hitch receiver installed I cannot put in one of those push bars. This bumper protector at least has some type of cushioning/shock absorbing properties which (and I'm not sure if the claims of the product are 100% true) could at least save my bumper/and my myself from getting whiplash.

Come out here and you will see how people here park (or try to at least). Every bumper front/rear over time will get scuffed if not damaged. We at least have the luxury of a rear backup camera which make parking a super cinch.

I live in Brooklyn and i am already seeing scratches on the rear bumped so i will definitely get this... Has anyone found a push bar for the front yet? all the ones i find are in Australia or the uk

^ I live in Brooklyn as well, though I have a driveway, try not to street park, and often only drive to Long Island. Year old, no scuffs or dents yet.

I have seen a CX-5 with a front push bar in NYC. Unfortunately I don't know where it is from. Not interested in it either as it looks out of place on a CUV, especially the CX-5.

I dont have a driveway option in park slope. People here are not considerate and will damage your car. I emailed Cj Wilson Mazda to see if they would sell their version as a kit and here is their reply.


The front brush guard is a highly modified guard made by Steelcraft that fits a 2008-2011 Mazda Tribute. The front of the vehicle also had to be modified to fit/retain the guard. The rear guard is also modified to fit the CX-5, because it is made to fit a 2008-2012 Ford Escape. The modifications to the rear were less intense. Both guards were purchased through CarID.com. We do not offer them as a kit, because they cannot be installed by the DIY'er due to the amount of modifications that have to be done to the vehicle. The vehicle has to be present for modifications/fitment. Anymore questions, please let me know.

I'll have to ask my mechanic if he knows of any shop that sells the front guard for our cx-5. There must be at least an universal one by width and height that would fit. I see a bunch of guards on cars in Flushing, Queens. Some cars don't even need one and has it. I've seen a Camry with front and rear. Looked like he was ready for demolishing derby.

I asked the same question too, the seller wrote this to me:

The Bumper Shield has the shank off set slightly so it will sit higher with the bent part up.

We consider “in the zone” when the receiver hitch sits between 12” and 16” measured from the ground to the center of the receiver.

The reason is that the federal government sets passenger car bumper height at 16”. Pickup truck, SUVs and Mini vans don’t follow those rules (nor do they have 2.5mph energy absorbing bumpers).

Usually when a passenger car hits you they’ve applied the brakes right before impact and because of their soft suspensions that 16” bumper ends up around 12” especially if they have 2 or more passengers in the vehicle. The weigh of the passengers will lower the bumper height an inch or more.

So most of the time, you need to be concerned about under-ride rather then over-ride because roughly 70% of the vehicles on the highway today are passenger cars.

do we know anyone that can measure the ground clearance on the hitch? It doesnt seem like those numbers jive.
If i do this i need to buy a hitch and install it... the weather here just isnt the best to be working on a car.

I want to do this, i just need to wait a bit.
