When I pull away from a dead stop sometimes I hear a sort of grinding noise from the front of the car - any ideas?
I can't determine if it is from the motor, trans or front brakes.
thanks pjh

My first guess would be that the front brakes are dragging just a bit on occassion. Have a local brake shop (that you trust) check it out.

Thanks - for your suggestion

BTW - does it sound like a metal on metal grinding? If so, I'd feel less inclined to think it's the brakes dragging and maybe something else. I generally check the least expensive parts first when diagnosing a prob - that's why I initially suggested brakes. Sometimes that's the way you find the culprit - eliminate the other (lesser $$$) possibilities.

Jack up your front tires, turn the car on, have someone mess around with the gas, clutch, gears, brakes while you go around the car listening to where it's coming from - you might be able to get something out of doing this.
Or don't jack the car and have someone start it from a stop while you run around it and try to listen to the car.
It could be so many things at this point.

o if its coming from that far front then yea i guess, i would think someone would know what grinding brakes sound like but maybe not everyone. i was thinking a more severe problem like a throw out bearing going bad but who knows
