great gas mileage is possible in LA/OC

(uhm) Mileage with the Proteges is all over the map. I'm getting 32-24+ with my P5 and my wife can't do any better than 29+. Both are NA, have about 9K on the clock and both have Injen CIAs and Magnaflow CBs. We both drive quite aggressively.

More of my driving is at 65+--about 80%--while hers is about 70%, but I still can't see whythe ES is down around 4 mpg/tank compared to my P5. My last fillup came with 471 miles on the odo. :D

other "money saving suggestions," from the 2003 proteg manual. gas mileage tips are in bold.

- Dont maintain one constant speed for long. (what's this about?)
- Dont drive constantly at full-throttle or high engine rpm for extended periods of time.
- Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
- Avoid full-throttle starts.
- Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine runs smoothly, begin driving.
- Avoid fast starts.
- Keep the engine tuned. Follow the maintenance schedule...
- Use the air conditioner [and the defroster] only when necessary.

- Slow down on rough roads.
- Keep the tires properly inflated.
- Dont carry unnecessary weight.
- Dont rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
- Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
- Keep windows closed at high speeds.
- Slow down when driving in crosswinds and headwinds.

I just filled up my tank last night. 17 mpg...(sad1)

But it was ALL city driving in Seattle. Stop and go, stop and go. And my trunk is full of crap, and I haven't checked the tire pressure in a while...I should probably check it...but still...17's just sad.

I took a trip up to Santa Barbara from Irvine area last week with the AC on (it was HOT on the 405 and 101!). I got 30+ mpg. Even when I do 100% city driving and am crazy aggressive, I never get less than 23mpg. The best I ever did was on a drive back from Las Vegas. I got a flat tire on the way to vegas, so I put on the donut and drove the rest of the way there at 55 - 60 mph, and the entire way back at 55 - 60 mpg. I got slightly more than 42mpg! Of course, driving I15 for 250 miles at 55 mph really sucks, so I deserved to get good mileage. I wonder if I put donuts on both of the rear wheels if I could do even better due to the decreased rotational mass.

My tires need to be balanced and I have a CAI. I drive like an ass when I have room to. Last couple of tanks have been about 380+ with a gallon or so left.
