Got rear ended today - luckily no damage!

This morning I got to learn first-hand just how strong the MSP's brakes and rear bumper are!

I was on my way to work in heavy stop & go rush hour traffic. During a break in the traffic, I manage to get it up to maybe 50 kmh, (25mph) I take my eyes off the road for about 2 seconds to skip to the next track on the CD. As I'm doing this, the car in front of me slams on his brakes. When I look back ahead, all I see is taillights closing in FAST! (boom05) "Oh, SH!!!!!!TTT!" I stand on the brakes....ABS kicks in........ brake pedal pulsates.......I'm bracing myself thinking, "She's gonna hit...and it's gonna be a bad one!" I come to a dead stop not 4 inches from his rear bumper.

Awesome brakes on the MSP! But other cars are not so well equipped and can't stop as fast and I immediately worry about getting rammed by the car following me. I quickly glance at my rearview mirror, and sure enough, it's rapidly filling up with the approaching front-end of a minivan. By this time, the car I nearly smashed into moved up a bit, so I had about 4 extra feet to play with. So I struggle to find first and get'er moving again quickly to put some space between me and the minivan.....

Too late!..

"BANG!!!!!" The impact felt pretty bad and sounded even worse! So there I am thinking, "Ah F#$K!!!!! Not another insurance claim!" After claiming $2K cause some a$$hole messed up my car trying to steal the radio from it not 6 months ago, I DON'T need this!(sad1)

So we pull over to the side and I get out expecting to see my rear bumper caved in and turned inside out(pissed) , my tailights gone(argh) , maybe the trunklid bashed in(bang) ....but NO! Just some very minor scuff marks on the rear bumper cap and nothing even so much as shifted out of place...not even the paint was chipped!(wow) WOW!(wow) He musta hit me going like 10-15 mph at impact I'm sure! Still fast enough to break or bend something.

I even opened the trunk to make sure nothing was bent from the inside...Nope!

So considering neither of had any serious damage and neither of us wanting to claim anything, the man apologized, we shook hands, and went on our way.

Phewww!!!!!

damn....the scratches would have pissed me off. Problem is man....if you have any damage at all you should've gotten it checked out. If you get rear ended no matter why....it won't be your fault at all....you didn't shift lanes or anything. So he was following to close. You wouldn't have had to pay for anything...and possibly would have saved money going to a cheaper place than what the adjuster quotes you. Me personally i can't drive a car i know has been messed up...it bothers me to much. I would have to get it checked out. But I'm glad it worked out for you :)

that sux man but glad she is o.k. I would have taken it some place to make sure nothing is wrong cuz if you find something wrong later you have to pay for it

ive been hit the same way, at first i didnt notice it but now im getting it fixed, my rear bumper sags down a bit, like half an inch away from the tail lights.. its not very noticable but i dont have to pay for the repairs

thats cool you dont have to pay. did you go through your insurance or just have a friend that hooked you up with some body work?

actually it was a friend that hit me, so i know his family and all, plus im getting hooked up by another friend at a body shop, so it turns out to be cheaper for my other friend, if that makes any sense?

right on, always good to know some one in the body work industry. ya it made sense, had to read it a few times to understand cuz I got cunfused...lol, but made sense

Wait, don't the bumpers have pieces that collapse if hit over about 7-10mph? If so, then the bumper won't absorb the impact if it ever gets hit again!
