I was in LBI over the weekend and a cop pulled me over says I was speeding. I told him I was going into the force and my g/fs brother is a cop and she showed him the badge she has. Instead of giving me a speeding ticket for going 48 in a 35 (bulls*** never happened) for which I was never clocked at. He gave me a ticket for not having the correct insurance card, my card was actually expired a month. I forgot to put the new one in my car which I have.

He gave me a summons and I have to appear in court on Sep 19 for an expired insurance card!!! I live in NYC btw so this sucks... I know in NY if you show them your insurance card at the court or before they usually dismiss the ticket with no fine. Anyone have experience or advice??

Most NJ cops know that people will fight a speeding ticket but iff they let you off easy you probubly wont fight it.

If you got a fix it ticket they'll let you go if you show them the good one. Explain to the judge that you have a good insurace card they'll at least lower the charges.

Oh Christ, LBI cops are the worst .. I live there every summer and I'm harrassed on basically a daily basis, and never for a valid reason. My favorite was when I was pulled over for supposedly speeding -- and when I asked the cop how fast I was going, the only answer he would give me was, "You were just going too fast." .. Yeah, okay.

Anyway, looks like you have a choice. You can eat the ticket, pay for it, and call it a day without having to leave NY. Or, you can go to to the court date in NJ with your valid insurance card -- which will prove that you did have insurance when you were pulled over. That will lower the costs at the very least, and it wouldn't surprise me if they just drop the ticket completely.

I'd make the trip from NY to NJ .. just because I hate the LBI cops that much.

Damn! What the hell is this crap. That really sucks. I say fight it. I know its a trip but it better then letting them win. Wow, I got friends getting tickets n others crashing their cars this week. I feel like some bad crap will happen to me now.

I SAY everybody I MEAN EVERYBODY in NJ, NY area should camp out at home for next month........Im the "others who crash their cars" technically I destroyed 2 of my BRAND ******* NEW wheels today.......

On the topic...I say go to court. It should help you a great deal.

Go to court. Technically, you're guilty for not having th ecorrect insurance card and that's what they'll stick to. Take your new (correct/current) insurance card and the fine should be under $40. It will be for not producing proper documents. It's the same as not having your license with you (but being a licensed driver) or not having your reg. with you (but the car is registered)

It's much, MUCH better than being hit with a fine for driving an uninsured vehicle which is a mandatory $500 fine and at least a 6 month suspension

Damn the east coast is different. In Illinois all you have to do is show up and prove you had insurance when you were pulled over and all is dropped. You may even be able to fax them a copy.

Try to call the county circuit clerk and find out.

Yeah, NJ is different.
Remember, municiple courts main goal is to get money for that township. Regardless if you have insurance, you need to prove you have it at the time of you being pulled over

Okay, here's my two cents on everything that went on. Not to worry anyone any more than I have to, but I think not having the correct documents can set you back 176 bucks. I would try to fight it if I had the extra cash. Weigh out whether or not there could be points added to your license, and look into if pointed tickets from another state would transfer over to NY (I know that if you have a Jersey DL, and are ticketed in any other state, it is an automatic 2 pointer. Only benefit is for those 4 point tickets you get; those transfer back as 2's as well) All in all, a sucky situation to be in. Hope things work out for the best.

Take the new insurance card to the township prosecutor before the court case starts the day of the case. They usually just dismiss it and you pay the court fees.

I remember few years back when I had to go to court for my stupid ticket one dude in front of me had a "no registration, no insurance" ticket and got his car towed. He showed the judge his registration card and insurance card (then current and still current) and the judge amended the charge to "failure to show proof of insurance and registration" with a minimal fine plus court fee (which was about $20 if I remember correctly). So bring your current insurance card with you to court and show the judge, let's see what he makes of it...

What insurance do you have? Progressive will email them to the court for you, might get you out of appearing!
