Got my new TV.....questions

picked up the new Samsung DLP Projection TV last night and so far so good. DVD's look great and HDTV channels look great but regular TV looks like hell.......from what I've heard though it's just because the TV really shows the limitations of the source cable signal.

Anyways, to my question.......I want to get a new DVD player as well since my old Panasonic one which used to be top notch is now outdated cuz no dual scan and stuff. I want to get the new Samsung DVD player with the DVI out since the new TV has a DVI input but I've read some different things about some DVD's won't play through that interface because there's some kind of security encryption issue. Also, does DVI make that much of a difference in picture quality that I would notice over a regular dual scan using the component outs?

Excellent choice in the TV...I have the 50" DLP and it SMOKES!!

I've "heard" that the DVI picture quality is phenominal, but my DVD player doesn't have a DVI out (not many do, not to mention how expensive they are) so I'm using Acoustic Research Master Series component cables, and the picture quality is incredible. I haven't heard anything about the DVI format causing problems with DVD playback. IMO these 2nd generation DLP's have a better picture than Plasma at a fraction of the price....not to mention the fact of, where in the heck do you hide all the wires when you hang a Plasma on the wall?!? You should see the slew of wires behind my DLP  I've got my DVD, XBOX, and cable box all hooked up via component cables, then there's the VCR, coaxial's, power, etc....geesh. The TV has 13 different inputs.....LOL!

Watching hockey in HD is better than being at the game.....unreal. The Superbowl in HD is gonna ROCK!!!!!!

Enjoy!!!

There are definetly some DVD playback issues with DVI. Also It's hard to record anything sent through a DVI input.

As far as picture quality goes I cannot tell a MAJOR difference between component and DVI hookups. I have never sat down and stared at them for long periods of time but my friend and I did compare the two when upgrading his system last month.

I am sure video display purists will tell you that there is a difference but with the playback issues I think Component is the way to go for DVD playback. DVI is better used for caring high bandwidth HD signals.

Checkout AVSforums.com for tons of helpful info and enjoy the DLP.

Also if you haven't already broken the bank check into a scaler for your cable signals that may help. Also see if your TV has some sort of auto display adjust mode where it will help the standard def. stuff look better

Personally I wouldn't bother with the DVI. When I switched my computer monitor from VGA (analog) to DVI (digital) I noticed NO difference. "In theory" DVI should be better since there's no D to A conversion needed but I didn't see it on my computer.

Computer screens already have higher resolution, so switching from analog to digital on a PC has little difference in quality.

TV is another story.

I'm getting ready to buy a '42 plasma screen tv for my new house. But I heard plasma screens have a shelf life, is that true. I don't want to drop $6k on a freakin' tv and it dies in 5 years. Anyone have good knowledge of what to buy and what to stay away from? I really need a space saving tv though.

My 50" DLP is only 22" thick and weighs a whopping 77lbs. How much more space do you need to save? I've heard bad things about Plasma TV's and their shelf life. Plus, if they break, they can't be fixed....so I've heard. Also, my DLP has a better picture, IMO, than most of the Plasma TV's I've seen for a fraction of the price. If you have the room for a DLP, they are the way to go.

Here's mine.

We're converting the bonus room in our house into a movie room. The room is not that wide(21ft) and the more space I can save with the TV the better. I'm really new into the TV scene I just figured with the space you can save and qaulity the plasma was the way to go. But now I think I need to dive into this alittle more. By the way I think my brother has that same TV and it is sweet!

DLP is they way to go for Mid priced HDTVs IMO. Plasmas have all the flaws everyone has mentioned. The shelf life thing is stilll under debate but the fact that it is being debated at all is pretty scary. DLP ROCKS. It has very few drawbacks even among video purists and IMO looks as good as any sub $8000 plasma display. Plus 90% of DLP TVs have tuners built in where most plasmas don't.

DLP= the shiznit, plasma=expensive crap.

If you need space, just get a DLP projector! Use the wall as the screen.

Exactly! Except please don't use just the wall as a screen. Thats a waste of a projector. Buy a screen or at the VERY least paint the wall with screen paint.

whoa 77lbs!!!

my 61" hitachi projection hd is pushin 300lbs...

and lemme tell ya. that was a pain getting it up to my 2nd floor apartment...
