Goodyear Eagle GT 225/45/18 - Review and Quesiton

I recently got 225 45R 18 Goodyear Eagle GT all season and here are some initial thoughts on them: (no pros/cons)

-A lot beefier then stock. But I do like the wider look on it. The carbody is slightly higher off the ground but has less wheel gap.

-Because of that IT'S HEAVY, feels like day and night compare to stocks.

-Because it's heavy, car feels alot more slower. I really do feel like I lost like 20hp. It just doesn't have that kick anymore.

-But because of its weight, I can shift nice and smoother. Believe it or not I don't worry about 1-2-3 lurching anymore, these tires give it more stable and balanced feel to the shifting. Take off in DD situation is nice and smooth. I think this was the best part.

-Turning is not precise/quick as stocks, definitely not a performance tire for sure, because of the decrease in power and turning.

-Rev sounds even louder but I think car works harder because of the heavy weight. This will probably result in worse MPG.

-Yes it does rub, not on the fender but inside plastic inner walls. Only on the right side front and back. I don't really mind this tho because it's only a plastic guard but Hopefully it won't do any major damage.

-Finally, it's absolutely blast to drive in the rain. It just planted to the wet ground, I really feel safe and stable at high speeds. Dunno how it will perform in the snow tho, I live in CA.

That's about it. Any inputs on my thoughts would be great. I have few questions::

1) Are all 225/45R like this? Feel this heavy? I saw that Continental DWS 225's weigh(22lbs.) less compared to Goodyears(27lbs.) Do you think DWS will have performance closer to stock potenza's??

2) Also with the lugging weight, do you thing this will in the long run create a problem in transmission or such? Maybe in the rotating joints?

3) What psi should I run the goodyears with??

Yeah I know, how can a 9 lbs increase make such a difference?
It really does.

Also my stockers are Powdercoated, could that make any difference??

When I replaced my stockers with 225/45/18 BFGoodrich G-Force Sports, only real difference was the tires were quiet under aggressive driving and the sidewalls weren't as stiff.

I don't think going a little wider will actually make you shift smoother. You can always just drive smoother with more practice.

Steering response could change since the tire is slightly taller and slightly taller.

As for revving, I don't get how the exhaust can be louder. It's probably you driving harder than you did before?

I had a set of these on my MSP years back. I traded the car before I even broke them in. Sexy tires, great in rain. Do not attempt snow driving with them.

Sorry about the 9lbs, I shoulda said 12lbs. 3+ for each wheels.

Anyways, I am guessing combination of powdercoated wheels and heavier tires resulted in this heavier feel. Maybe I should weigh the differences with stockers..

3+ pounds per wheel of rotating unsprung weight is enough to feel massively different. I look at wheel/tire weight very closely when choosing a tire. An example is when I put my 16" steelies and snows on, all of a sudden the bad stock shocks aren't overwhelmed over every dip in the road

Okay I see that makes sense.

So Darth, do you think this will do any longrun damage? Putting too much stress on something like rotating joints or what not?

Good Day
I put on some Yokohama Avid W4S all Season 225 45 R18 which weigh 26 lbs. and I went from a 13.63 to a 13.56 in the 1/4 mile probably due to a better foot print and feel no HP loss or heavyness as you describe.

I see. Seeing your 1/4 time, yours is probably modded right?
My power is stock so I am probably feeling it more.

I bought the eagle GT when they were a new line of tire, guess they still kinda are, I had 225/40/18's and I only got about 8k miles out of them before they started going bald. I bought them december of 08' and replaced them may 09'. Granted Granted my car is modded and I drive it like I stole it half the time but they lasted just as long as the stock brisgestones. From what I understand they bridgestones were a stickier compound so I thought the goodyears would have lasted longer. I wasn't particularly impressed with them, my friend with a 09' MS3 likes them but his car is stock and we have very different driving habits. Maybe I had a bad batch, but I don't think I'll ever buy them again. I bought some riken raptors 235/40/18's to go on my daily driving enkei 8 1/2" wide rims, they were cheap, and I've put 14k miles on them with about 40% tread left still. For somewhat sticky and everyday driving and hooning needs they've been great, I wouldn't ever take them to the track but for the street their great. I got some hankook icebears on some stock m3 wheels right now for the winter, snow tires make a pretty big difference haha

Evidently some tight asses here last couple. Anyway, no chance of damage, just less fun feeling.

If there's any lack of sensibility in the concept of reducing unsprung weight being good for a car and its handling and feel, I guess I missed it. I guess all those racers were wrong. Maybe they'd go faster on the stock MS3 neutronium-lined wheels.

I have had these tires on my car for over a year now and I absolutely HATE them. Crappy traction in dry weather vs. stockers, good in rain though. My main problem with these is that they have had vibrations from day one, and have flat spots from sitting overnight. especially when it's cold outside. Probably defective from day 1, but the tire shop wouldn't do anything about it. Looking forward to a new set of tires next month finally. These have lasted a while, about twice as long as the stockers. about 25k worth of driving.

I don't like these either. It's pouring like mofo in LA and although wet road driving is fun, but like you said, dry traction is big difference compare to potenza's.

I am gonna look into Continental Ext. DWS or DW heard good things about them. Also according to specs they are 22lbs compare to GT's 27lbs, stocks are 24lbs. And like darth mentioned above I really do believe 3 lbs. is big difference. I am currently experiencing it.

225/45-r18

Hey guys.
I'm looking at replacing the stock tires (5Zigen Sports engine rims) on my MS6 with 225/45-R18s.
Firstly, will they fit with no mods/rolling?
Secondly I am looking at the selection out there. Hankook Ventus V12, Yoko S.Drives etc.. Any experience or recommendations?
Thanks.

Might want to ask MS6 owners about the fit-up(ughdance)
