Good laptops

The Toshiba Satellite laptops are pretty cool. But I'm a desktop guy so this is not my forte. But Dell or Toshiba are good. As for the MACBOOK... It's cool and all and being able to run XP is a nice bonus but since most Mac users think OSX is the ish and XP sucks, I wonder why they are all excited about being able to use XP. Oh and if you get XP make sure you get XP PRO not home. More secure, less fluff. Bottom line, they are nothing special. Just a nice laptop.

i say whatever you do go, get the new Core Duo from Intel. that processor is an absolute beast.

my experience:

dell - good hardware, software support blows balls.
ibm - great business notebooks, no frills but always come through.
hp - heard nothing but good things.

you could build your own if you want.

just recently i bought an Acer off of newegg. here's the link:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16834115239

great hardware/software, and you can pick up an extended warranty for like 180.

gl finding yourself one.

here is my option of laptops. I worked as a IT intern for 5 different companies and is what i've gathered over the years. I am currently a consultant and is on the road every week

For home use i'd say
Mac - which u've expressed dislike it.
Fujitsu - lifebook series one of the best series of notebooks around. not only does it have a lot of advanced features but it also has excellent reliablity. At a great price too.
Dell - Great warranty within the US. Go out of the country and oh god it is a pain in the ass to get ur lap top back
Toshiba - Great on just about everything. If used for heavy travel you have a chance of Hard drive failure.

For work
IBM - #1 choice for travel hands down. I had one for 3 years and loved that thing. Nothing else comes close.

For Extreme conditions
Panasonic Toughbook - u can punt kick that thing and it will work.

thats right! i forgot when i used to sell laptops a great selling point on fujitsu's is their international warrenties are top notch. most us laptops loose thier warrenty once taken out of the country.

...There is a reason why Macs only have about a 2% share of the computing market....

ya but they have 12% laptop market share. as seen on the lastet report. I I know u don't want an apple but I just want to make sure if u are going to throw stats around we look at the right ones.

My first computer was an apple macintosh performa 630C. that 33mhz 68k piece of garbage lasted me all throught highschool. (claris works was the s***!) After highshchool I spent alittle over $4000 on the computer I now have.(started with this barebones kit http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=RED-ZMAXDP&cat=BBK)

I then purchaced a refurbished Powerbook titanium (Titanium case bitches!not that aluminum crap.)

I must say the power book is by far the best machine I own. Much faster prossesing in most areas. only problem is the upgades are far more limited than with the PC.

I did own a thinkpad for a while but it was a pice of junk and was constantly being serviced (thank got for a good waranty) I finally just got my money back after the screen whent out.(only 2 weeks after I bought it.)I found the powerbook and life has never been the same.:)

I'm really liking those fujitsus. Is there any known problems with them? How is their customer service also?

Fujitsu is good -- I own one. Customer service is helpful and they are very reasonable with warranty work. I am typing from my new HP, though, and its build quality is way better. My fujitsus and others I've tried out tend to be a bit flimsy in comparison.

Maybe I should clarify as "percieved quality". Stuff like the panel gaps being precise and minimal, plastics being pleasing to the touch and sturdy, the LCD's frame being so stiff that you can close it by one of the corners without it bending, black plastics having a uniform matte finish, and more.

hmmm, I'll have to find some place with fujitsu to tell. but I have no idea if any stores around here carry them.

buy a apple Macbook

did you hear they are now the same as a pc

they now use intel cpu's wich are x86 the same as a pc.

you can run windows XP and OS X on them

plus they are a better machine, and built better

www.apple.com

trust me they are worth your money. for one you have the expanability of both OS X and Windows XP it will run both due to the fact it has the same cpu as a pc has now but the cpu is better than a pentium 4 they are called intel core duo AKa it has 2 core's. since you willl have both windows xp and OS X you will not find anything that wont run. i think OS X is a way better OS than windows XP any day. and OS X has the same bell's and wistle's stuff as windows vista has. they just released about a month ago a black macbook with a stronger case

they are worth your money

the major reason they didnt have a grip on the masses was due to the hardware diffrences between the Mac and pc. due to the fact thar there arcetecture was way diffrent from a pc that developers didnt want to train people to make stuff on diffrent hardware.

now since Mac's has almost the same identical hardware Mac's are gaining ground to the pc market for the simple fact that the intel Mac will run windows XP and software developed for windows like it would on any other pc. and people are seeing whats good about OS X.

back before they switched to intel Mac's used cpu's made from IBM and or motorolla G3, G4 and G5 wich was way diffrent than the intel x86 or AMD x86 cpu's. now they use intel core duo wich is a x86 cpu wich will run windows XP and its software cause its basicly another pc now

IMHO i would choose apple's Macbook or Macbook pro cause they are a great system. Apple has greatly improved from its older day's and have seprated them selfs almost entirely from the older Mac system's wich the downfall's or people shunning them cause they didnt have this or that or because they was diffrent or any other things you have herd about apple no longer exsist.

Yea im a Mac user i use a Beige G3 AIO, its a older Mac but not part of apples screwup system's of old.

if you have a Fry's electronics they are one of the few that sell them. just go in there and tell a sales guy your interested...you'll get him all excited. fujitsus have by far the highest commision than any other computer. hp desktop = $8....sony laptop = $20-$30....fujitsu laptop = $40-$100 per unit.

i used to work there. but they really are great machines.

I'm sorry but Macbooks are no better built or better running than a comprable non-mac laptop.

You may like OS X better but you my friend would be in the vast minority. I was a craphic design major and used a mac in classes through 4 years of college. Overall, I wasn't impressed and had no desire to switch from my custom built PC.

Macs are good computers but as I stated earlier, they are nothing special. It's more of an image thing than anything else. They have a fabulous marking department but apart from that, nothing special at all.

Why does every thread in which someone asks what laptop/desktop to get turn into a Mac OS vs. Windows vs. Linux vs. Solaris vs. BSD vs. DOS vs. OpenVMS vs. anything else....

The man needs a laptop, not an argument on market share, value, how many OSes the thing will run, or how much more pussy he'll get because he's using one laptop over an other.

NONE OF THAT MATTERS.

He is the one with the budget, needs, and wants....it's his money, not yours.

^^^^tell that to the folks who keep pushing the macs when the man clearly stated he's not interestes^^^

Also we're aware it's his cash but he asked for opinions and advice and thats what most people are giving him!
