Going Turbo, By Summer of 07

what about intake bumpin? also stock protege 5 downpipe = bottleneck.

Intake?
I take it you are referring to something like a cold air intake? I am going to fab my existing intake to work with it.
Downpipe?
bottleneck, nah, shouldn't be. it's straight thru. the only restriction I have is my muffler. I have no cats or anything.

Matthew,
I am still trying to figure out why you would turbo an automatic P5? I seriously am not trying to be an ass, it's not my nature. I respect Mark and all that he has done and Ken's reputation obviously speaks for itself. To me it seems that you are taking 1 step foward and 5 steps back. The pain and trouble that you might (and I wish you the best) go through seems that you may not receive a return on your investment. You are a young guy and you obviously have a love for Mazda and their product. I respect that. Why go through the trouble w/ an automatic? Just curious.

Probably the same reason as me... It's what I have at the moment

I am doing because I can't get a loan for another car that is already turboed. Yeah it sucks it not a manual, but hey, its unique and another thing is I probably wouldnt be able to drive a manual(I am too tall). I also have put too much dinero in my car as well.

No actually i would love to answer this question

The reason why I am turbo'ing my automatic is because i've always had the urge to do something like this, I am in love with this car, I dont plan on Drag racing it, or Autocross either. I plan to show off whats been built. IMHO the car doesnt have enough power for my daily driving or expressway driving. Boosting to 5-6 PSI and finely tuning it I believe It will put out more then enough HP for me. The opportunity to pass up a inexpensive turbo kit, but very well made turbo kit by a forum member is very hard to pass up. I'm not getting rid of this car anytime soon either. I love the car for handling and for its looks

Little Beavis told me it is more then possible to do this, I thought about it for a month calculated my finances and it affordable. The downside to this is I do have a AUTO, but see theres the difference. Sure there are Manual MP5's that are boosted but where in my state is a Tuned Automatic? I dont plan on just boosting it i plan on building a stronger more efficent transmission and forging the internals of this engine. I also am going to make sure i baby this car, watch how i shift and control my shifts ( my car is shift tronic)

So theres your answer. Thats why I'm doing it

True that. almost got in several wrecks trying to get out of my subdivision where the speed limit is 55. hopefully this will change with the turbo.

Nothing wrong with turboing an automatic...

Just a rant here:
I just don't think many people on these forums understand why half of us do anything to these cars. It really does depress me that every time someone mentions that they want to go turbo, one of the first responses from someone (and usually one of the senior members, sadly) is "get a different car". Sure the Protege isn't the strongest platform and I will admit that I did not know this when I bought it but that doesn't change anything at all for me. I knew from the start that I did not want a Honda or a Subaru (to be honest I was always more of a truck person) but I've always loved the Protege and I intend to improve upon the car I love. So to all those people I say "I want a turbo'd Protege5, and I don't care what I have to do to get it nor all the problems that may arise from it".
end rant

In other words, if you want a turbocharged automatic P5, go for it (just be careful because you guys have more things to worry about that weak rods) but I will say one thing though, don't complain if something breaks (because something always does)...

Haha, yeah something similar here although I wouldn't dare punch my car. Knowing me and my luck, I'd just break something else. So it's pretty much a bunch of swearing on my part. But so far I've been able to forget everything I've screwed up... just gotta step back and take a break.

You should be a moderator. lol. Good stuff.

Haha, thanks for the compliment, but I don't think I've been active enough in the forums to be a moderator (not that I wouldn't accept iif asked though, LOL).

I really just don't like it when people tell other people right away that something is impossible or not worth it. Obviously if someone asked, then they believed it could be worth the endeavor. I understand some things would be difficult but as it'd been said before, anything is possible with money

Yeah I have so many rattles with the AWR motormounts. I get different rattles at different speeds and different temperatures so I have pretty much given up on trying to fix them all although I do get very annoyed at times. I find the best solution is to just turn the music up... But yeah, I can't even count how many times I have said "Goddamn car!" LOL

I punch the dashboard when it rattles.. it definitely only makes the problem worse, but at least it feels nice to take action haha.

Matthew, thank you for answering my question....congratulations on your enthusiasm! Keep up the good work.

FYI, I also plan on joining the FI world myself within the next 4-6 months. I hope I did not discourage anyone w/ their future plans w/ their Mazda......specifically the P5 clan as I feel we are the underdog. Keep up the good fight! I was just curious.

Dave.

i turbo'd my auto because that was the car i had, wasn't interetsed in getting another car and well just wanted to do it and take my chances...so far so good..if it blows up well, then it blows up and i fix it (maybe get the lentech eliminator??)...i'm having fun and to me it was worth it...of course i've spent way to much money on the car in general, but it's my hobby and i love messing with it!:)
