I recently found a Mp3 in great condition for a low price. I was just wondering what are the best mods that i can expect atleast a moderate gain from. I am aware that this particular car already has an intake a set of headers and an exhaust. Any suggestions on camshafts, camgears, suspension etc.

suspention, TEIN S Springs, AWR rear sway bar
Power, midpipe
apperence, CF hood

that's what i would sugest

I was just researching and found a set of Mazdaspeed camshafts with a claimed horsepower gain of 18 for 430$. Im pretty sure the hp gain wont be that high any thoughts?

Any other suggestions? Any things i should know in advance before starting to add more performance parts?

eBay CAI $50
Apexi Filter $70
OBX headers $200-250, very nice power gains
RR-racing Underdrive Pulley $150
Mental Addicition Motorsports midpipe
Hi-flow catted-- $240
Catless-- $140

You have one of the greatest suspensions ever... no huge need to upgrade stuff.
If you want to go lower, Tein, Eibach, Goldlines, Espelirs... take your pick.

You could buy my turbo kit, link is in sig. ;) Otherwise, I would get a catback, intake, header, and coilovers. That is going to be my setup in about a week. (Already have the coilovers and catback)

Sorry-- you said it already has headers, exahust, intake....
shoudl read thread first....

In that case, go for the J-spec intake cam, Mazdaspeed exhaust cam (jury is still out on the Wagner cams), the underdrive pulley, and some good engine management ($$).

If the struts are getting old: Illuminas.
To go lower: Espelirs. That's what I'm doing. :)

i'd go with the cams from srmotorsports.com before i'd get the jspec/msp s***. the cams from sr are the mazdamotorsports cams...so you'll see more gain...hell, i had them and i could hang with a msp from a rolling start until it hit 4th (a msp is in boost WAY too long in 4th for me to hang)...then get some cam gears and have it tuned. ACT clutch, UR flywheel (protegegarage.com has both) as far as suspension, leave it alone...unless you want it lower. i'd go with eibach sportlines (1.8" drop f/r)...get a TWM short-throw...kartboy bushings...

it all depends on your budget...if you'll let us know what kind of money you have to spend, i'm sure we can all throw some ideas out there.

So are these different than the cams most people get?

Interestin'. So really nice gains? Anyone else here run these?

yeah, most people get the jspec intake and a mazdaspeed exhaust. the cams at sr are sold through mazdamotorsports for people who actually race (you have to race email an app along with timeslips just to be able to purchase these from mazdamotorsports). IMO, these are more aggressive than the jspec stuff...but i could be wrong. they made a world of difference in the p5...wish i still had them.

yeah the cams that Topher is recommending are ridiculous in comparison to stock and still a nice upgrade over the jspec/msp setup.

overall, for what it is already supposed to have, I'd say the cams, a midpipe, professionally tuned with a s-afc or engine management, and start upgrading the suspension with GT Spec/AWR parts. I'd worry about the suspension last though and do it slowly so that you can try to gauge the neutrality of the car after each mod. no sense in totally screwing with one of the best suspension setups ever mass-produced if its not going to be balanced.

hey Topher, so you got rid of the cams?
do they drop in? (I know it's not a simple thing to put them in.... seen that huge How To :) )
wonder why you have to 'prove' you're a racer? emissions? or they're offering these for a somewhat reasonable price to further mazda motorsports?

i don't know why they do it like that...i guess to keep kids from buying the parts...who knows.

they're not THAT hard to install...but it does take time...i plan on getting them again. i shouldn't have sold them in the first place...i thought at the time that i wanted to just put it back stock. oh well.

the cams may give 8 hp max, I have the ones from SR motor sports. They seem to not give as much horsepower but more power through the rpm band, thats what it felt like to me. Downpipe maybe a problem unless you keep the cats, NYS is a pain for inspections.

wow...what other mods do you have? they all work together...i had intake, header and no cats...so my motor may be more free-flowing than yours...giving the cams a better chance to up the horsepower more.

the cats is the biggest issue if you want to stay legal in NY and some other states, had a friend tell me that the cat is a good 10-15hp gain if you get rid of it, not sure if he's right but I am sure its something. The better the air flow, the more power you make

so, it all depends on how much air is entering leaving the motor...i don't like it when people pop on a mod like cams...get a dyno...show some gain...then free-up their exhaust with a header and say "wow, my header gave me 20whp!" no you idiot, you've just helped your cams create more along with the gains from the header.
