Going synthetic

I agree with you in not getting hp gains or anything outlandish like that. I do agree that synth is the best stuff for our cars, and that the best filter is also important. I went with the Purolator 02 626 filter for the v6 motor. It is larger than the oem P5 filter, and takes up enough space to allow that extra .14 of a quart to 4 quarts total.

I do not read Super Street, so I am not familiar with tha article. But thanks for your good input!

Alot of info here...

When you switch, just do a regular oil change and switch... no need to blend it in slowly.

Although there's alot of conflicting stuff I see here, I truly doubt you'll ever see a noticable difference between Mobil One, Royal Purple, etc. Maybe if you were driving a 800 HP race car, but not on a street car. There's really not much difference. Don't expect to see gains in HP or milage. It's more about pride and knowing you're using the best stuff available in your baby.

Make sure you pick a decent filter also, but don't overthink that one too much either. Let's face it... we tend to spend alot of $$$ on stuff that probably really only makes thinks improve in our heads!

PS: Not disagreeing with any of you here... just my experiences and info from what I've researched in magazines like Super Street (August 2005, pgs 116-122)

Whatever newbie.

Lol, don't equate my postcount with my experience. I religiously keep records of mileage and gallons at every fillup. I ran non-synth 10w30 for 5k miles - avg 29.6 mpg.
amsoil 10w30 synth for 8k miles - avg 29.1mpg, and so far with mobil 1 5w30 (after 3K miles) I'm on 30.3 mpg

27mpg to 33mpg? C'mon, unless you were running on pure sludge before or your driving habits and routes have drastically changed, you need to get real!

The only reason I can see to use synthetic oil is for the extended drain intervals, which means you don't have the hassle of wrenching that damn filter off every 3K, and possibly a "warm and fuzzy" feeling.

I can see this turning into yet another oil debate thread though, which is pointless. Everyone does what they are comfortable with, it's that simple...

Look junior, I experienced the mileage increase with no change in driving habits, and the oil was changed at 3100 miles. I drive my car with a prettyheavy foot, too.

Not much I can say, it helped me, and it has helped others. So getting "real" , I got 33mpg right after the changed, and get 31-33 mpg now freeway, which I never got before. Really. And I did not make the change for extende oil changes, give me a break, kid. I did it because synthetic has been reported to be better than conventional oil.

Being "comfortable" with my decision, I have found synthetic to have helped.

You have not mentioed the type of gear oil you are running. If you have not moved to synthetic, then you have no room to talk. I noticed improvement when I changed both the engine and transmission oil.

Sorry if my gains are better than yours.

As far as an endless oil debate thread , I am just reporting my success. (usa)

More important is the additive package. Conventionals can have an excellent add pack, and with such can exceed the performance of less than ideal synthetics or syn blends.

Synthetic vs. conventional is mostly an argument about the basestocks and the viscosity improvers needed to get multigrade performance. Plus the desire to push to a longer drain interval of course. But there are other issues with extending, and long intervals (say 8k or more) should not be tried without used oil analysis.

As for detergents, it's best to use diesel engine oil, which is blended with a lot. Chevron Delo is generally considered to have the best add pack and base stock. The high mileage oils actually do have additives (detergents and seal conditioners) that can help with leaks over time.

Particular makes of engine sometimes show an affinity for particular additive packages. In my case, I've gone with Chevron Supreme conventional due to the great add package and very low wear rates shown through used oil analysis. I am not a proponent of extending the drain interval that much. Although after 1500 miles the oil in the P5 is still honey colored. I've never seen that before. The engine is running very clean.

Are you saying that you switched to synthetic from conventional with 3100 miles on the odometer? If so, then that could play a part in your increase in mileage - putting fresh synthetic in after the break in period. I don't doubt at all that you got that mileage increase and smoothness after switching. Those of us who know Raider will vouch that he's no GI (see the off topic fun in the "Post a pic of your GF/BF" sticky if you don't know what I'm talking about). I think I may have picked up 1 mpg since switching. I'm averaging closer to 26 mpg around town in the summer as opposed to 25 mpg last summer using a different oil. But my switch came at about 29K.

Thanks for the help guys I think I'm going to go with royal purple just cuz I like to waste money. Tomorrow is the auto parts store. I'll be sure to post pics....joking joking (spin)

no, I made the changeover at 3100 on the oil change. It was still pretty clear, actually. I moved to synthetic with 30K on the car.

importcrazy, good luck with the changeover. If you do the trans too, you will need a 23mm socket, or it will be apia to do with channel locks. A crescent wrench will not fit, either. You will see why when you get underneath.

After all of this oil talk, I remembered I need an oil change on my baby. Went with Mobil 1 10w/30 and a Bosch oil filter. I'm sure I'll be pleased, and sure there will be no problems. Car has 21K miles on it...

Problem is, when it was up on the rack, I found that I need a new driver's side rear strut. What to do, what to do...

Cool. Wife's 02 B3000 will be going to synthetic next weekend. 25K miles, the trans needs normal servicing, so gonna swap out all fluids. Fun! 10 quarts of Amsoil ATF will be pretty cheap..yeah, right!

Lol, I haven't been called that in about 25 years, but thanks for the compliment! (thumb)
