Does it matter if I get the ACL or Clevite 77 Engine Bearing Kits? Is one better then the other? Or am I getting the same thing out of both and I'm just paying more for the the name on the ACL?

If you go with ACL race bearings, they will result in looser clearances in your journals. This may or may not be a bad thing, as the saying goes "looser is faster" ;)

However, keep in mind that the Race bearings are a hard-type bearing, not soft-type. This means that any contamination in your oil has the chance to score your crank, whereas the Clevite 77 bearings are a soft-type. It embeds foreign particles from the oil into the bearing so that your crank is not damaged in case of contamination (or in your case, a spun bearing).

I had my crank micropolished and with STD size Clevite 77 bearings I was at the OEM service limit of 0.002". With ACL race it wouldn't be in the manufacturer's specs. This is a Honda motor, and I believe Mazda clearances are not as precise but don't quote me on that.

As far as your pistons go, are your cylinder walls in good shape? If there are scratches/gouges, you should overbore and go for oversized pistons. This also allows your machinist to precisely bore each cylinder to its respective piston, and the piston-to-wall clearance can be kept consistent. Superficial scratches are fine; a simple hone will take care of them. However if they catch your fingernail, you definitely want to bore it out.

Are you assembling the motor yourself or having a machine shop do the work?
