It's a documentary on an electric car made by GM (the EV1) in the early '90s and how big oil companies, the government, and the automobile industry worked together to bring it down, even though it was a viable zero-emissions vehicle.

Go rent it! I recommend it to anybody and everybody, and especially to car fans...it's just a cool movie overall! (nana)

I've recommended this movie to a few people, most of them non-enthusiasts. The general view of the movie is that it is a very alarming conclusion. Even if you aren't a gearhead, it is a good flick. My fiance watched it with me and she couldn't give two craps about cars, yet she enjoyed it.

I almost forgot about this.
A shame that politics and profiteering (to exhorbitant levels) will continue to control things for quite some time.

No offense, but personally it sounds like a total bunch of crap. I've read reviews (even ones from somewhat liberal reviewers) that tear this one apart.

Nevertheless, I'll bump it up in my Netflix cue. :)

Just saw it. very interesting, and even if there is a bit of conspiracy theory flavor to it, you always have to think about where those theories came from. If electric cars were around today, I'd drive one.

Even if you do have to produce electricity, the amount of polution needed to generate it -vs- the amount of polution created by gas is a big difference. Plus there are many 'free' ways to generate electricity too: wind, solar, hydro. No they aren't up to same effeciency level yet, but if more resources were used to help develop them then it would be more and more effecient.

Think about one day a completly free source to drive your daily driver car... PHEV would be the next step, which is a pluggable hybrid. you can convert your hybrid to be able to be plugged in to store power overnight, so that you can run 50+ miles with out the gas engine at all. Then if you wanted to go on a trip, the hybrid would charge the batteries just like normal opperation.

My pops has a Hybrid Civic. everyday daily driving he gets about 40mpg, that included stop-n-go, highway, city.

So who killed it? Dick Cheney? Will he clone himself and personally assasinate anyone else who ever tries to make an electric car? Sound like a lot of whining to me.

You know what killed THAT not THE electric car? The technology and economics just weren't there yet.

Do you think a year after the Wright Brothers people were talking conspiracies about Who Killed The Kitty Hawk?

What's great is the social commentary from the peanut gallery who haven't even seen the movie yet.

A large portion of this film details social, political, economical, and technological reasons behind the seemingly unreasonable delay for alternative energy transportation. Thus my Al Gore comment. This isn't just a whiney, tree-hugging stab at the current government. It's fortunately deeper than that.

It doesn't matter how deep or how correct it is. It still is just fuel to the fire for anyone against bush. They don't give a **** what the facts are they just care that it supports their narrow minded point of view. Look at Michael Moore's movies. they highlight only the facts that make his point. These people are just as arrogant a Bush.

Have you seen the movie?

If not, then how are you speaking with ANY relevance?

that's not approved for highway use. it's a glorified golf cart...

As far as Bush is concerned, GM killed production to the EV1 in 1999, before Bush was even elected.

Yes I have and I found it quite accurate but that doesn't mean s*** because all people will see is the big bad oil companies ******* things up again. This whole thing is about global warming. peole know there is a problem but they choose to point fingers rather thatn fix the problem. Al Gore is doing his part but most of the people who follow him and go to his movies are not doing s***.

Al Gore is doing his part? Al Gore doesn't do s***. I do a fuckload more than Al Gore to have a small "eco-footprint". I just can't afford to buy "carbon credits" aka "21st-century yuppie-hippie indulgences".
