GM officially dumps the Pontiac GTO

i like the idea of retro cars, love the new challenger...camaro (maybe)...but pontiac really screwed up, IMO...that car has no retro styling..not saying that was what they were looking for, but that's what i'm looking for and it just looks like other midsize pontiacs! maybe the "new" gto will be back and look more like the camaro concept??

maybe it would have been better not to have named it a GTO?

American car companies still havent pulled their heads out from the deep recesses of their asses. They still are designing ugly family size sedans or SUV's when a majority of people are looking for a smaller car with better gas mileage and better all around styling, not the crappy interiors that are the same from model to model.

i think chrysler is on to something...and i was never a mopar guy, but they have been extremely sucessful with the recent offerings, ram tucks, magnum, 300, charger, challenger..and of course the whole hemi thing (which is not the hemi of old)

that's what i've been saying since its inception. awesome car...just not a gto. and it never looked like it belonged with the rest of the pontiac lineup. along with that fugly new SV6 minivan...er..."crossover".

i liked this car. I think i saw the interior once and it was too pontiac for me, but i liked the power and the exterior.

I was looking forward to the rumored redesign for 07 or 08....rats...

I think this car is great, but due to the brass at GM they dropped the ball. Rode in a friend's GTO and it rides great and I think it's a nice car. I just don't agree with how GM always try to reuse car and "rebadge" to something which it isn't. They should of just brought it over like a Holden and leave it alone. The name GTO is a very prestigous name, so it's a hard sell to sell this car to the "old" crowd without it having some design cue from the old car.

Nice car overall, but GM is in a trying time.

same here, good looking vehicles, tons of power, and cheap

its to bad that GM killed this, its one of the only cars they have that I actually semi like

3 years and its dead. Thats to bad! They had it priced to high. I've seen used 04s for around 20K.
Holden ended the production of the Monaro so they can begin production on the new Zeta platform. I don't think GM had much choice.

I agree, I seriously thought about trading the MSP in on them when they had the huge rebates. With my friends discount I could have had one for around 20k brand new which you couldnt beat at the time. Granted it was an 03 with less hp but still a very nice car. I have driven a couple of 03's and some of the 400hp GTO's, the interior is great on all of them, and all fun to drive.

Good, now maybe I can buy one cheap.

Perhaps the only GM car I've liked in years - (probably because it wasn't created here in the states). I don't think it needed to look like a 64 Tripower and think that most "retro" designs are useless (I like the Mustang).

I agree that GM had no choice, Holden is stopping production of the Monaro and upgrading to the Zeta chassis...but broke-ass GM US isn't. It will be a sad day when Toyota becomes the #1 car maker in the US but it won't be long.

Ao where is everyone gonna get their Grand Prix with hood scoops from the factory now? These poor people have been through enough with the cancellation of the Aztek.

The GTO was also cancelled because of the 07 airbags regulations. GM would have had to redesign the dash and steering wheel.

There will be an 08 GTO based on the Camaro. Maybe the Firebird will be back too!

People totally missed the point of this car. Sux for them. Screw Retro Styling. The new stang is too chunky and apart from a few expections, I'm already getting tired of them. This GTO was discreet (Like the original), Fun to drive, spacious and just plain fast. Maybe in a few years or so after I've paid my car off and finallt get rid of it, I'll be able to find a low mileage example on the cheap. I would love to own one of these and put those mustangs in their places!

YAY ITS DEAD (yippy)

I for one am glad that GM stopped dragging a prestige filled name like the GTO through the mud with this awful aussie imposter. If they called it a monaro, i would've been ok with it.

Plus the Monaro front end looked way better. I drove a GTO, and was not impressed. The steering wheel made a horrible grinding noise, and the car felt like what it is : a pig. I'll admit, I'm a GM fanboy, but this car didn't do anything for me. Too bad, cuz it did look good(before they put those awful hood scoops anyways), but it just wasn't fun to drive(for me anyways), and was a tad overpriced. Still better than the new Muts though, as Donas64 stated.

I like the 1st gen style over the new hood and such... I could see picking up an 03-04 GTO in a couple years for a nice price.
