2008 Mazda MX-5 5MT PRHT
So I've got the means finally to work on my MSP. I'm tired of this lame FS-DE engine that Mazda saddled the MSP with.

I'm looking for a KL series. However, I think it would be sick to pull a newer Mazda 6 V6 as well. I can't buy right now but I'm looking within the next 8-10 months to start purchasing items for this.

Any help on where to find new/used V6 mazda engines and matching transmissions. I'm only looking for a standard tranny... none of that lame-ass slushbox nonsense.

If you're planning a part out in the near future... let me know as well. I need a lot of pieces to make this work.

It will be boosted as well.

f-yea...find a wrecked one at a junk yard and get movin'! how far are you planning on going with the motor? just a turbo or a fully built beast?

We can probably help you with that..

Cool! (2thumbs)

As far as this build goes, whatever I can afford really. I mean, I have a nice cushion to work with too so it might get a little fun. The plan was to go with a KL-ZE and turbo the fool out of it. However, I don't know much about the difference between the KLZE and KLDE is. However, I was thinking that doing something a little different could be cool like throwing the Mazda6 V6 in there. However, it's newer (most likely more costly) and probably wouldn't perform as well as the KL series.

I know JITB has done a KL swap in a 94 Protege and I've asked him about it before (when it was less likely to become reality) but I'm just not sure of the specifics yet. All I know is I want a faster car but I want my MSP still, hence why my sig no longer shows me getting a MINI Cooper JCW.

So any thoughts, ideas, price ranges, etc. would be helpful so I know what kind of endeavor I'm in for. I mean, I know what my budget is but I'm not going to throw a whole bunch of numbers out there this quickly. The hope was that I could go fully built, forged, etc. I definitely don't want much problems but then again I'm in a Mazda and I'm pretty sure Mazda is Japanese for "This s***'s gonna break tomorrow."

Glad there is interest. I'll stay tuned as much as possible (remember, I'm in Afghanistan so for instance, right now it's 9:30 at night for me).

I have a millenia klde(same heads as a klze) and mx3 trans for sale. Check my fs thread for details. Only want 100 for the motor and 75 for the trans.

From what I've read Dale, the ZE is better for NA power cuz I think it has high compression where as the DE has lower and better for boost but I'm not totally sure.

Cool. Being that I've decided to let professionals do the swap (since it is a sizable task), I think they will be purchasing the engine/transmission. How long you holding onto that though for reference if you don't mind me asking?

Nope... no more awesome limited production MINI.

You're such a postwhore Wagon... :D

Whatcha think? I'm making a much better decision am I right?

hey you instructed to come here for futher banter. I just followed directions.

and if you're hiring out to a shop to do the work, no I don't see that as any better or worse... just, equally pointless. but thats my very biased opinion.

Explain how it's pointless? I mean, I'd rather spend the money on the engine and have someone who knows what they're doing install it v. me do it and end up breaking a perfectly good engine and be even more out of pocket.

Oh yeah... that's completely in the same ballpark as what I'm talking about. While I'm at it, I'll go ahead and buy a house in the Hollywood Hills, get a private helicopter so I can land it on top of the Trump Hotel in Vegas where I have a penthouse suite.

Seriously?

Serious dub is always serious. The house, helicopter and penthouse are a bit much though, I mean you seemed happy where you were at. *shrug*

Just a word of advice.

The KL still uses the same glass transmission as the FS so do think your gonna get to crazy with the power unless you upgrade.

The plan was to get the transmission treated (well the gears anyhow). I have 10 months to do all the research I need to make this engine as bulletproof as possible. Thanks for the tip!

I retract asking you to bring it in here.

In fact, I'm going to throw a Chevy V8 in there and call it a day. Then again, I suppose all those engines are basically s*** too. Funny seeing as how my stock FS has 150k and climbing on it. No major breakdowns.

Again I ask, care to explain?

there are far more bullet proof engines out there than anything in the FS or KL series of engines. Funny you should mention it, the new series chevy V8s (LS engines) are arguably one of the best engines made in recent history.
I've got over 100K on my FS (everything is internally stock, minus the diff) as well, so if you treat them right, they will run well. my point is that if "bullet proof" is the goal, this isn't the right car, or engine.
