GI: Transmission Gearsets

Gears are not shearing because of their strength. It is a lack of oil lubrication issue that has surfaced.

Is it lack of lubrication or is it oil break down because of heat? I see that tripoint runs manual trans coolers on there boxes, I wonder if they figured something out?

so I just read the lubrication issue posts. For those that wont be running too much over 300whp, we might not need gears just better lubrication or cooling, so can we just get that upgrade and not the gears themselves? and maybe if we want, a gear such as a taller 5th?

Tripoint also uses a redesigned gearset. I would say that they usse the oil coller because they race the car and are really hard on the transmission.

Can you give me details on the circustances in which it blew.

In gear?
Shifting?
What type of oil you are using?

...Today while driving it, I pulled 2nd gear to 6K rpm, shifted into third, and about a second later, all hell broke loose...

He was running redline lightweight with a little M1.

Starting to get nervous about mine... what kind of oil were you running focus?

I was running Motul equvalent of the lightweight. I am trying to figure out if failure is due to oil being to0 thin as well as not enough oil getting to the synchros.

From Redline's Site:

LightWeight Gear Oil

A friction-modified gear oil designed for use where 75W80 GL-5 gear oil is recommended (may be too slippery for some syncros). Used in many motorcycle applications as an alternative to ShockProof types. It has excellent low-temperature flow which allows easier shifting when cold and good synchro compatibility.

Hmmm, I am wondering the same thing... I think I might go ahead and switch to some redline heavyweight and top it off with a little bit of the lightweight for when it is cold. Anyone forsee any adverse effects of doing that?

The compromise:

Heavier oil = Better Lubrication IMO, but harder to shift.

Yea, that's the only negative I can really think of... not a big deal at all.

Focus and I have discussed this, but I'm not completely convinced. The fact is the lubrication issue "marks" are showing up on the synchros... which when in gear do not rotate relative to anything... therefore they can't be the reason for a seizure or blown gears...

As Focus knows, I have my box setup and will have a cooler on it shortly... just have to afford the pump :)... I will be offering cooler kits for sale for anyone interested that would include all the parts you need and the instructions.

However, Nick's solution here is MUCH more robust than any "band-aid" fixes... it's impressive s*** I can tell you that!

thats exactly what is in my tranny... and I can tell you, that heavyweight sticks like glue to the funnel... be prepared for it to take a long time to pour.

but I guess thats a good thing, it will hang on the gears a lot better.

i'm getting ready to fill up my tranny today...

I'm thinking redline heavyweight... I was gonna use shockproof or whatever the hell that is... Isnt heavyweight harder on synchros?

I'm going to fill mine up with motul gear 300 75w-90. I've already tried redline mtl and royal purple. I think royal purple is the better of the two.
