That is the sound of my timing belt teeth being chewed off on my crank sprocket.
My timing belt lost a few or so teeth on it yesterday.
Help!!!!!
Does anyone know whether a 2002 protege DX 2.0 is an interference motor?( I hope not!!)
I pulled the valve cover and none of the valves are stuck down on the upward facing lobes, so I dont think any are bent. The mazda dealer says it is an interference motor, but several techs I know say they arent. Has anyone had a timing belt chewed or broken and then found out if the motor is interference or not? I dont want to waste my time doing the belt first if it is a valve bender and just do the head job from the get go---- but not if I dont have to. The motor didnt smoke or have any problems at all before. It got its first oil leak 2 months ago at 140k.

Mithell on demand does not say whether the motor is interference either.

It's a non-interference motor. For sure.
Get that fixed and have a nice day (mj)

It is a non-interference motor, and I wouldn't trust 99% of Mazda dealerships and their advice as far as I can throw them.

Yea, if you look around the threads, there are a whole bunch of people who got screwed over at Mazda dealerships and "Mazdaspeed" shops. So you should definitely look into doing it yourself.

You can do it.
