Gauging Interest: Protege Supercharger

is that the 1.8? doesnt look like a 2.0 and is there enough room for the s/c to fit without hitting the firewall? looks like its gonna be tight, and possibly remove the stur bar....

Ken,

How much leg work has already been completed from the first attempt or will you have to start from scratch again?

nothing womp related would be used. this is ground up fabrication. something akin to what focus posted is what i had in mind.

Subbing. If this can produce anything near what the womp prototype was making hp wise, then I might have to stop my current plans on the car.

sounds like an awesome idea, but how much of a strain would it put on the rods under low rpms? the nice thing about the turbocharger is it doesn't spool up until the motor is going at a speed where it is less of a load on the rods, but under lower rpms at full boost might be a little much for our crappy fs rods...

lol, its usually not a factor people think about with any other car, but a point that should be taken into consideration with the damn FS rods...

(these things suck so much you cant even give them away for free, Ive tried haha)

Personally not keen on putting a charger on my car, but keen to see it done for everyone else...

a few thoughts from when I invesitigated doing it for myself

a centrifugal would offer the best performance, and simpliest operation (works like a turbo, no need for a bypass when the charger is "off", the engine would simply breathe through a non-spooling supercharger)...so in the long run would probably be a cheaper option.

I investigated the option of custom brackets to relocate some of the accessories to make room up front for the charger whilst retaining aircon... Obviously expensive, but would certainly be worth while looking into.

A torque bar to move the charger over to the gearbox side would also be another solution, although its not ideal.

if roots, or screw type positive displacement, consider a water to air intercooler between the blower and the manifold (for the love of god, build a roots blower into the IM - remote positive displacement sucks the big one, they are woefully ineffecient to start with...)

Belt driven pulley but GEARED DRIVE UNIT is a must - belt drive units (the "silent" superchargers) are boost limited.....

Clutch on/off linked to a MAP sensor would be handy...those with aftermarket management could simply plug an output condition to trigger on WOT or on a load threshold, but others wont have this option...so some sort of MAP sensor "black box" solution for triggering the charger clutch on under load would be very useful....

Anyway...thats my thoughts on the matter...good luck with it - hope something comes out of this :)

I fully remember reading all about that. Did not mean to stir up trouble and I aplogize if I got anyone angry with bringing that up. It would be nice to see an alternative for forced induction. So by all means, if protegegarage can make it work, I'm sure people will buy.

What About Turbo, and Supercharger ? Massive power at low RPM's, and more power at mid to hi RPM with the turbo, i've seen a few Cobalt's with Turbo and Supercharge at the same time. and let me tell you. what a beast. you don't loose power at any stage... good thing to see in a Protege how does that setup performs....

its all good, no worries :) to be 100% honest alot of people lost alot of money to him during that whole ordeal and I am happier to be uninvolved from it!

as for twincharging per se, yes i think thats a good thought too. i may even have 505zoom convinced to tag team just such a project with me. stay tuned.

(rockon)

Even if I don't run the twins myself, I am down to help with the manifold part. Talked to my buddy Kelly today and he expressed interest in the project, so as soon as I have a print for the bottom of the SC unit, the ball will be rolling on that.

Would love to see this finally happen, it has been years of hopes and dreams, let's get it done! :)

Something like this:

Imaging Adding a Turbo in the front.... like a GT35 or so... what a deadly combination. i've seen these in Cobalts.. they are beats...

twin charger is an awesome set up.....but should stand alone from a supercharger setup...
if ken does a supercharger, there would be next to nothing stopping people from buying that kit, and attaching it to an existing turbo charger setup....

and yes, twin charging *is* a fearsome combination....but the poor old g-series gearbox might hate you all for it :)

im all for a centrifugal super charger kit especially if you can get one of the new rotax ones that hks is using. its a friction drive and supposed to be the new hottness for superchargers. even oscar jackson is getting in to them for a supercharged honda fit not to mention the benefit of all those regular proteges looking to forced induction this may be the wave of the future. roots type are ok its hard to place a intercooler on that particular set up. i think it could be a winner. with a centrifugal you can keep the intake mani and you can fmic it or a2w it. i saw a tuner edition supercharger with a custom bracket made to keep ac and what not on a sentra ser vspec its possible. maybe the way to go. i guess its that simple, the vortech chargers should allow you to cnc a bracket to mount it and your off and running. good luck and ill keep my eyes on this one.

you know, most people don't go supercharger cause you wont get as much horsepower out of it as you could if you did a turbo kit....but for our cars, since you cant push the boost past 10psi on stock internals, a supercharger kit would be awesome for us....probably one of the only ways our cars can see any big noticeable gains on stock internals without destroying the motor haha
